Verified Purchase Review submitted for Canon EF 500mm F/4.0 L IS USM Lens, With Canon 1-Year USA Warranty (CN500LIS) Pros: Strong Construction, Rugged, Consistent Output, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Durable Cons: Heavy, Draws Lots Of Attention Other Comments: I have been taking wildlife and scenic photos for years, but never no matter how good the photos turn out are the subjects close enough, especially the wildlife shots, I used extenders, but even then your limited. I have been dreaming of this lens for years even considered the 600mm F/4.0L but due to the weight difference and reviews chose the 500mm instead, glad I did, it's all the weight I need. Construction is like a tank, and auto-focus fast. One big thing to consider is this lens draws lots of attention from on lookers, so have big strong partner as back-up or good insurance just in case. You should also be prepared to spend another grand or more on a good heavy duty tripod and head. I got a great deal on a used Gitzo 1548 and I've ordered the Wimbeley II gimbal head for it. Don't try putting this lens on a cheap tripod or it'll end up in the dirt and you don't want that to happen. If your into bird photos and wildlife then I highly recommend this lens, if not then stick with the smaller lenses and extenders only because this lens is not cheap and it is an investment that needs to be used not stuffed away in a closet. Six Grand sitting in a closet collecting dust isn't a good investment. I've purchased lots of photographic equipment from Buydig in the past and their great folks to do business with. There is nothing like a prime lens. I considered the 600mm, but 4lbs extra weight kills hand holding for birds in flight. So far I have some great keepers which are much improved over my 100-400 canon zoom, the only OOF have been my fault. Using it on a Canon 5dMk2 with 1.4TC, so it's 700mm at f5.6. The picture quality is just great! Can't wait to get back out shooting, going to try some moon photos once the next full moon cycle starts.
