The manual supplied with the camera was not detailed enough to understand all the possible setting on the SX130 IS Powershot. I recommend buying new fresh rechargable batteries (I use Eveready, AA) because these help with the power hungry camera. I tried the suggestions in the op. manual to change some camera setting to conserve power also. So far I really need to test it more...nothing earth shaking from the camera at this point. So I needed the full manual. But the full manual is only available on line, and is way over 100 pages. I printed just the ones I thought might be useful, but still printed about 100 full size pages, using up lot's of printer paper and ink. And that's kinda impractical to carry with the camera. I'd like to see the camera come with a full manual in medium-small print that would be reasonable to carry with the camera. People complain about the short battery life. But that's pretty expected when the camera only holds 2 AA batteries and lights up such a big LCD screen. It's easy enough to carry lots of spares in your pocket and in the free camera case. And the little charger with 4 AA batteries is just the ticket. I kinda worry about protecting the LCD screen from scratches and impacts. And I'd sure like a viewfinder for bright sunny conditions. All in all, it's an awful lot of camera for the money, with lots of modes and flexibility, excellent 12 Mp resolution, and excellent 12 X zoom. Even when it beeps that something's not right, it still takes excellent pictures. I was taking excellent pictures before I even read the manual. Remember you have to flip the flash up by hand. My impression is that this is an older model camera that was once their top-of-the-line compact, and cost about twice as much. The price gradually came down from mass production. All its modes, larger lens, and well proven and perfected features, make this camera still compete favorably with all the new slim ones that have half the features and flexibility and a smaller lens. I needed a small camera that I could operate in flight in my ultralight airplane with one hand wearing gloves. This camera has lots of large buttons that make it easy to set up, adjust, and use with one gloved hand. The smaller, slim cameras have tiny buttons and half as many buttons. So you have to go into menus and submenus to set them up. Where this camera will do it directly with one button. I was surprised the camera came with two 4 Gb memory cards. It wasn't clear on the web page that the package deal would come with two. The package deal was such a good deal... about the same price as the lower SX120 model with the same package, and you get the free extra memory card. So this camera is essentially a free upgrade. It's definitely a best buy kind of deal. I was worried at first, when the instructions said you had to push the shutter button halfway every shot and wait for a focus beep. That takes a fairly deft touch, even on the ground with bare hands. In flight it would be impossible. But it was easy to set it to constant focus mode so you can just push the shutter all the way.
