Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 10.2 MP Digital Camera (Silver) with 8GB Card, Case, More
(E1SNDSCTX5)
Pros: Fast start up, Great high speed burst, Panorama ability, Excellent Photos, Stylish, Compact and Portable, Large touch display, Easy to change settings
Cons: Battery life
Other Comments: I spent a good deal of time searching for a quality, compact water/dust proof camera that I could bring on a trip to England this Spring, as well as at Burning Man this summer(a yearly event that takes place in the desert, with lots of fine dust blowing everywhere). With no protruding lens and the very durable, sealed body, I'm very excited to use it on my trips in a few months, and confident it will hold up to both the London fog and the extreme conditions at Burning Man.
In the meantime, I've been getting the hang of using the camera in wet and snowy weather, and it has preformed admirably. I've played around with most of the settings, and have been impressed overall with the quality of photos I've gotten out of the Sony Tx5. The flash seems a little harsh in some situations, and I'm going to have to thumb through the manual to find the red-eye reduction option.
The panorama feature allows you to get really spectacular and unique shots, both indoors and outdoors. I haven't tried printing any of mine out yet, and am not sure if that will prove to be an issue, but on the computer, they look incredible.
The hand-held twilight feature also gives amazing results with low light situations (not good for moving objects, but for still scenes it does a truly impressive job selecting features from the six photos it takes within a second.) The fast burst mode is also great quality, certainly the fastest and most high quality burst mode I've used on a camera. I have a 3 month old puppy, so the fast bursting speed is a must for some of his more rambunctious antics.
The battery life isn't great, but I purchased both a Sony and an off-brand spare battery, and they both seem to hold up about the same, and both charge fairly quickly. I would recommend getting a spare battery to throw in your camera bag, as well as putting a protective film over the back touch screen. The touch screen works just fine with a screen protector, and since that's how you view pictures and control all of the functions, it's worth the extra couple dollars to avoid scratching. The screen is a great size, and easy to navigate around functions and review photos.
Some people might have trouble with the tiny zoom control, especially if wearing gloves of any sort.
Being able to turn the camera on and off with the sliding lens cover is certainly a nice option to the teeny on/off button on the top, though.
Yes, I recommend this product
