Review submitted for Sony NEX5NK/B - NEX-5N with 18-55mm Lens (Black) ULTIMATE BUNDLE (E1SNNEX5NKB)
Pros: Easy To Use, Good Image Stabilization, Fast / Accurate Auto-Focus, Fast Shutter Speed, High ISO Performance, Good Image Quality
Cons:
Other Comments: The sony alpha-NEX-5N is a perfect step-up from a compact camera. I previously used SLR's, but for some time only compact cameras. I really enjoy the possibilities for indoor photage without flash this camera facilitates. The price that you have to pay is a bigger lense, making it bulkier than an SLR; also, I would've preferred a built-in flash.

5 out of 5 stars   Solid hardware with useful features.

Review submitted for Sony NEX5NK/B - NEX-5N with 18-55mm Lens (Black) ULTIMATE BUNDLE (E1SNNEX5NKB)
Pros: Good Image Quality, High ISO Performance, Useful features, Large Clear LCD, Tilt /Swivel LCD
Cons:
Other Comments: I haven't tried other mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, so all I can say is this: I am impressed with the quality of this camera, satisfied with my purchase, and see no glaring aspects which should be better. I chose this camera after thoroughly researching the available options. Its hardware suits my needs best among those in the price range: a full-size dSLR sensor gives good low-light sensitivity, dynamic range, and so on. The surprise to me was the many useful features in the camera's software. Since photography is not my profession, I prefer not to spend hours at my computer doing postwork on my photos. Even when I have the required skills, I often simply don't have the time. So, features like automatic HDR and automatic panoramas not only save me time, they actually allow me to take pictures that I simply wouldn't have had the time to put together otherwise. One slight disappointment was the size. The body itself is quite compact, but in comparison, the lens is enormous. Unless you want to spend $300 on a fixed wide-angle lens (or you have pockets as enormous as mine), you're not going to fit this in your pocket. If I understand the optics correctly (don't lynch me if I don't!), the large image sensor requires a large lens. For a compromise shifted more toward portability at the expense of a little quality, you could look into cameras with the Micro Four Thirds sensors, from Olympus and Panasonic. (Sensor size comparison: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sensor_sizes_overlaid_inside.svg). As for other common complaints: 1) yes, the shutter is loud, and it draws attention when taking a rapid-fire panorama. 2) Sony has straightened out the issue of clicking when taking video. 3) I've read that the lenses aren't the best. I don't have the knowledge to compare to others, but I will point out that the corners of the image are somewhat darkened when the 18-55mm lens is fully zoomed out.

Review submitted for Sony NEX5NK/B - NEX-5N with 18-55mm Lens (Black) ULTIMATE BUNDLE (E1SNNEX5NKB)
Pros: Smal size, Image Quality
Cons: menus could be better, Lens is still big
Other Comments: Best camera for those who wan DSLR quality, but simply won't carry one of those around. Availability of adapters means you can match all sort of old lenses with a great 16mb APS-C sensor.

Review submitted for Sony NEX5NK/B - NEX-5N with 18-55mm Lens (Black) ULTIMATE BUNDLE (E1SNNEX5NKB)
Pros: Auto HDR, Good auto settings, Hi-res touch viewfinder, Lens opt with adaptor, Facial recognition, Best in class sensor, Image Quality, Portability, Noise-free at hi ISO, Articulating viewfinder, FullHD video 60fps, Price per feature, Mirrorless, 10 frames per second, Thin small pocketable, Super fast shutter
Cons: Short battery life, Tricky big lens handling, EVF not included, Inane user interface, Manual settings a bear, Expensive accessories, Expensive E-lenses, Few e-mount lens opt
Other Comments: When the previous version NEX-5 came out, I thought the image quality was already better than the cameras in its class based on its handling of noise. Being a mirrorless camera, the lens upgrade options were limitless. But I was still hedging between that camera and a Canon t2i. Then the NEX-5N came out... *** THE GOOD *** - IMAGE QUALITY DURING ESP. IN LOW LIGHT - I saw the reviews and the image comparisons between NEX-5N other mirrorless cameras as well the some of the best intermediate cameras like the Canon t2i and the Nikon 3000. The NEX-5N image quality even on low light conditions and high ISO beat the big guys hands down! - KIT LENS I'm usually prejudiced against kit lenses. But after getting to know the 18-55mm that came with it, I really appreciated how good it is. Granted, it's not the sharpest lens, but once you know the combinations where it works best, it takes amazing pictures. Using the kit lens gives you more smart options. - MANUAL LENS VERSATILITY - I have tons of manual SLR lenses sitting around from different manufacturers ranging from the Russian rangefinders, Canon FDs, Contax, Video... With adaptors, NEX can use them all. Using a 60 year old lens on a month old camera seems weird somehow, but yet it is so cool. - THE LOOK - With my manual FSU pancake lens it looks phenomenal. Sexy even. Looks like a point and shoot, not so serious camera -- but the very heart of it proves you otherwise. - THE FEEL - Solid and sturdy, light and small. Although you won't break a toe if it fell on your foot. - SPEED - I have not experienced any considerable shutter lag even under low light. The super fast speed priority mode is so awesome. - VIDEO - People complain about the clicking noise in the video (though it never bothered me), but then again you are not meant to (usually) keep a camera still while taping. It never bothered me since I expect this camera to be a still frame camera with (some) video capabilities. The video quality is amazing for what it is. - AUTOMATIC SETTINGS - I barely ever use auto settings. But I was impressed with the features this camera has. *** THE NOT SO GOOD *** - THE INTERFACE - It's not a big deal if you were shooting with an auto lens and didn't care about manual settings. But using a manual lens with it can be a bear when you have to tweak your options continuously. I would no have minded if Sony added a new external button to deal with ISO/SPEED/FOCUS. In fact, it would totally change the way naysayers look at the SONY NEX line. This seems to be its lone Achilles heel however. Maybe it is designed this way so people looking for manual control would look at the NEX-7 instead. - MANUAL SETTINGS - Not so great, because you need endless tweaking when you use a manual camera during M or A mode. But once you've assigned a shortcut to the multi-button (I assinged ISO on mine), the settings problem become less severe. - BATTERY LIFE - The specs say that CIPA is around 400 something, but even when I used a 3rd party battery at 2x the capacity, it's never really gets around to that. Again, this always depends how you ultimately use the camera. Night shots and high ISO and video will definitely kill the battery quicker than it would if you were shooting during a sunny day with lower ISO settings. Bottom line... despite its very minor weaknesses. I this camera still blows away the competition with its top notch image quality, portability, and the ability to use any manual lense known to man. It's really what I was looking for -- not bad for a camera that looks like a point and shoot.
