Out of the box I started snapping some fantastic hand held shots! The value speaks for itself in the amazing photos compared to a more expensive lens. The one negative which isn't really one is that you can't zoom when the hood is in the storage position. Actually, this encourages you to keep the hood where it belongs covering the lens! Focus is fast, VC is so useful, and USD better is par or better than Canon 70-300 IS USM. I took a chance with this lens and I am glad that I did. It is heavy, but I quickly learned to adjust my hold to accommodate its size. Focus is quiet, though far from silent. Outdoors the noise is not an issue, but I am finding that when inside I prefer MF to avoid drawing attention. The filters were a major bonus for the bundle price.
