This knife fills the bill. The Sandvik 12c27 steel takes a good edge and retains it. I tested it by batoning 20 peices of firewood, batoned it into crosscuts, drove the tip a 1/2" into the wood and used lateral pressure to test tip strength. The knife is a little light for chopping, but this is a positive aspect for hikers. The blade was controllable enough to make small wood tools and traps. I used the knife to skin two squirrels and the blade geometry handled this well also. I think for most users this would be a good and cheaper alternative to the gerber LMF.
