I did not double the cleaner (as recommended) to see how the cleaner would do on it's own with just a single amount. It did OK, and did lighten the area. The water in the steam vac was disgusting, so it took out more dirt than I realized. I will definitely repeat the process with the double qty of cleaner to see if it does a more thorough job. If your carpet is extremely dirty, it is going to take a lot of detergent, along with some extra elbow grease. I found that mixing the detergent with hot water in a spray bottle made a pretty good spot treatment (which I then scrubbed on my hands and knees with a nylon brush).
