Generally, they lasted about 2 to 2-1/2 years. If we bought a more expensive model, it lasted a bit longer. Less expensive models died sooner. Each unit got repaired at least once, generally for a belt replacement and in one case I replaced a switch on a more expensive upright (in the last case I ordered the part and installed it myself, saving a few bucks in labor costs). All told, there was an average cost per year around $190. With that in mind, I went looking for a new vacuum cleaner when our fancy Hoover gave up the ghost. We had a Eureka before that. We have carpet, carpet on stairs, tile kitchen and bathroom floors and a bit of hard wood flooring. The Hoover Tempo I decided on was recommended by Consumer Reports as a good value. After having used it for several weeks, I have to agree. It does what it's supposed to do. It's lighter that the fancier feature packed machines we've used in the past so it's easier to push around. A bit more bending to get to switches or to move the plug from one outlet to another (due to the shorter cord), and the suction hose is shorter so moving the upright around is more frequent. Overall it's less effort to use than the heavier models we've used previously. And, at a price point that's about 1/2 to 1/3 the price of the more fancy models and brands we've used previously, if lasts a year, I'll be making money on the deal. My only real complaint is that the brushless suction tool mount doesn't hold the tool in place so it keeps falling out (the little plastic ridge in the snap mount isn't beefy enough) so we use a bungee cord looped over the handle. Bottom line: it does what it's supposed to do at a fair price. Fancy gets more features but at more weight and more cost and not necessarily a longer service life. It has a feature that allows me to pull out the vacuum hose and, with the on-board extensions and attachments, I can essentially convert it into a cannister vacuum and suck those pesky dust balls out of the corners!
