5 out of 5 stars   Great portable player, better sound than most premium audiophile DACs

Review submitted for Astell & Kern AK120 II Portable Hi-Fi Sound System (Stone Silver / Aluminum) (IRAK120II)
Pros: Small size, nice packaging, good feel and excellent battery life, Super accurate sound, you will hear what is really in your music files, good or bad! The sound of good recordings will let you hear things you never heard before, The bad recordings will show as not so good, but you can use the EQ to help the sound if needed, Sounds even better when using an external battery charger (like the Lenmar 1100 ma unit), Great match for Sony MDR 7520 headphones, not very good for Shure earbuds.
Cons: The nice charging stand / docking station does not fit the newer model 120 MK II, Like the sound so much it is hard to turn it off, want to listen to my whole music collection, Menu setup leaves a bit to be desired, need to read the FAQ on the A&S web site to get it figured out, Does not match up easily with a Mac……can be done but there are several hitches in getting your 'non-purchased' files loaded up, and play properly. Read the FAQ to learn how to delete the files that did not transfer properly.
Other Comments: I am a recording engineer with knowledge of the way my recordings should sound…… and this player nails it right! Imaging, micro dynamics, macro dynamics, tonal balance, transient response, this play is up to the task of the most dynamic 192/24 music. It will take about 12 hours of play with really dynamic music to get it broken in, but after that, be ready for great, accurate sound.
I recommend this product Yes, I recommend this product
