2 out of 5 stars   Disappointing Performer

Review submitted for Kodak EasyShare C190 12 MP Digital Camera (Red) (KDC190R)
Pros: Easy To Use, Great Zoom, Large Clear LCD, Small / Compact
Cons: Lcd in bright light, Poor Image Quality, Poor auto-focus, No Viewfinder
Other Comments: I bought this Kodak looking for an inexpensive camera to replace an approximately six year old, 3.2 megapixel model of another brand. I needed a new day-to-day camera. I wasn't expecting Ansel Adams quality images for this price point but have to admit I'm disappointed. Much of my photography revolves around very active 3- and 5-year old children. Getting them to stand still for a picture is quite difficult. My old camera usually gave sharp images when used in its Sport mode. Not so this C190 in either Sport or Child mode. I'd say a good 30-40% of kid images are badly out-of-focus. The best images I've gotten were shot in the Portrait mode with its attendant wide aperture and fast(er) shutter speed. But sometimes you want more depth-of-field than Portrait will allow, so it's only a partial answer. I believe the problem is the auto-focus sensor itself. You can tell it "hunts around" for the main subject and often chooses the wrong one. Even a pic of my wife opening a Christmas gift on her lap was out-of-focus! Macro focus is equally an iffy proposition. I'm sorry but that's really unacceptable even for an inexpensive camera like this one. The LCD screen is essentially useless in bright sunlight. This past weekend I shot pictures of airplanes landing at the local airport. My vantage point was great, right at the threshold of the runway. But even as close as I was I couldn't see the planes in the LCD screen. I ended up cupping one hand over the screen while pressing the shutter button with other. Even then it was very, very difficult to see what the camera was pointing at. Nor is it very steady. A simple optical viewfinder would've solved the problem in an instant. Alas, no such animal on the C190. That big LCD screen is also a serious battery drain. I ran through the Kodak cells that came with the camera before I could even fill the internal memory. I replaced them with Lithium batteries and they're still going strong after ~200 pictures and about a minute's worth of video. Consider Lithium batteries a requirement for this camera. All is not negative however, that same LCD screen that performs so poorly in bright sunshine works great indoors. Screen images are bright and crisp. (I just wish the corresponding pictures were as good.) The zoom is fast, extensive and surprisingly precise for this price point. Image quality outdoors is pretty good. I've gotten a few nice images of static subjects. And while the C190 has overall modest dimensions, the controls are big enough even for guys with sausage-like fingers. Overall I really can't recommend this camera. I wish I could because it does have some nice features. I could probably live with the LCD issues but the poor auto-focus is just unacceptable. I'll rate it as 2 stars but really wish I could give it 1.5/5. Yeah, it's that disappointing. If I could, I'd return it for a refund or credit against another camera.

Pros: Large Clear LCD, Easy To Use, Nice Body Color
Cons: Poor Image Quality
Other Comments: I bought this camera for out of the pocket use hoping to catch a few decent pics of kids and friends. No such luck on any setting. Poor image quality and hardly worth the time taking the pictures. Sorry Kodak, looser camera!

Review submitted for Kodak EasyShare C190 12 MP Digital Camera (Red) (KDC190R)
Pros: Nice Body Color, Good in Low Light, Great Zoom, Easy To Use, Good Image Stabilization, Short Lag Time, Large Clear LCD, Small / Compact, Good Image Quality
Cons:
Other Comments: This camera would be perfect for a child or adult who is, lets say, technically challenged, because it is so easy to use. Uploading is a breeze, very easy to do, one-step and automatic. I would buy this for my parents, or even a child because the price is so good. The quality of pictures are excellent, I have made the cutest vidoes and pictures of my granddaughter. The photo quality is the same as any 35mm. I love my camera, and at buydig.com I saved about 50%
