4 out of 5 stars   Good but not perfect

Review submitted for Olympus WS-500 - Digital Voice Recorder (Blue) REFURBISHED (OM142040RB)
Pros: Long Battery Life, Small
Cons: Mediocre audio quality, Slightly clumsy interface
Other Comments: I purchased the WS-500 to replace a much older Sony ICD-B100 recorder that I was unhappy with. I was hoping for something smaller, with better audio quality and longer battery life; the ability to upload files to my computer was a plus but not the top priority for me. The WS-500 is smaller, so I end up carrying it around more often--a big plus. Thanks to its ability to be turned off and to turn on in just 2 sec (the Sony was always on), battery life is long; also, it ships with a NiMH battery and it can be charged without removing (via USB). It appears as a standard external drive on my Mac with no drivers needed. On the negative side, the audio quality is pretty poor, even on the highest settings and with good headphones. This is not a device for recording tracks you would want to listen to repeatedly (e.g., not good for music). The user interface is pretty good, with the one major misstep of requiring 5 button presses (of 3 buttons) to erase a track; this is a big nuisance if your major use is for quick memos (the Sony needed 2 presses of one recessed button). 3.5 stars, would be 4.5 with easier erase.
