5 out of 5 stars   Nice lens

Review submitted for Raynox DCR-2025 PRO High Definition Telephoto Lens 2.2x Pro (RXDCR2025PRO)
Pros: High quiality glass
Cons: Small visible back
Other Comments: Hi, this is the third "professional grade" lens I tried for my camera. I had to return first two [cheaper] lenses for unacceptable quality, and I am keeping this one. Here are some points I would like to highlight about this lens. I'm using this lens with Fujifilm finepix HS10, which has beautiful 30x build-in optics with visible front around 58mm. Visible back of the DCR-2025 lens is around 33mm, so I have to zoom in to 10x of my original zoom (22x combined) just to get rid of the "tunnel effect". Even the best additional glass in front of ones camera will reduce quality of the shot; therefore, one shouldn't install additional lenses if desired object can be reached with original optics. In the case with my camera, for this reason, the 22x lower limit should be acceptable, as 22x is still less than 30x. Obviously, this should be less of a problem for cameras with smaller front lenses. Also, it is worth mentioning that this very limitation contributed to another important lens feature: lens does not lose light, what is very handy for darker shot conditions. Another practical point I'd like to make is about expected difficulties with long range shots. Again, in the case with my camera, total zoom is 66x (1584mm equivalent), what is comparable with a low end telescope range. Therefore, one will not be able to make a decent shot without a steady tripod. Also, it will be hard to find those perfect conditions for a shot: smog, heat haze for horizontal shots, humidity, other weather conditions will be always working against you, limiting your practical range for a shot. Another problem with long range shots is potential chromatic aberration, which might or might not be caused by the lens itself. The lens will magnify whatever your camera sees, including ever so noticeable defects of the camera's original optics. Chromatic aberration is clearly visible on the attached straight-out-of-camera moon shot; however, it can be easy eliminated by some post-processing. For the reason stated above, I'm not sure is this a camera, a lens, or combination of both who are to blame for it. Chromatic aberration is a characteristic of an individual lens (if it is the lens to blame), so it is not, necessarily, will be present in a lens you'll buy. In any case, it is less of a problem for smaller distances, and it shouldn't be noticeable in the practical range you will be using this lens for. Attached images are straight-out-of-camera, no attempts were made to improve the quality.

4 out of 5 stars   Good Quality, but will Vignette

Review submitted for Raynox DCR-2025 PRO High Definition Telephoto Lens 2.2x Pro (RXDCR2025PRO)
Pros: Good construction, high quality glass, Little light loss, About a half f-stop lose
Cons: This will likely vignette, Back circle is only 33mm
Other Comments: High Quality product, but the 62mm mount is somewhat misleading as the back lens size is only 33mm, so lenses with a filter size greater than 33mm can have some vignetting. However, a zoom lenses' effective filter size is reduced as it is fully zoomed. For example, my 28-300mm zoom lens, has only a small amount of vignetting when fully zoomed (300mm/f6.3). A bit of post processing cropping can take care of that, but when less zoomed, it'll need more drastic cropping. The good news is I now have an effective reach of 990mm/f7.1 in 35mm equivalent. Use it for fully zoomed situations, or when in very low light, using a fast lens, e.g. f1.4 or f2.8 and need a farther reach. Ideal for some cheap prime lenses like 50mm/f1.4. With this converter, you'll have about 110mm/f1.7 which is 35mm equivalent of 165mm/f1.7. Good buy if you know the limitations.
