4 out of 5 stars   Sigma IQ favorably compared to Canon L!
By Gasman on June 24, 2013

Review submitted for Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR (SG50F14EOS)
Pros: Image Quality Bokeh Fast, Strong Construction, Nice Bokeh
Cons: Blurry Focus
Other Comments: Required factory focus recalibration. Still slightly front focusing, most noticeable wide open when there's little DOF. Re calibration process was painless. I paid to ship lens and camera body to sigma in Long Island NY, and they took it from there. Got it back in a few working days. I used downloadable focus charts to confirm issues, which improved. I compared it to my pro photographers canon 50 1.2 L on a tripod and we found IQ to be subjectively better with the sigma. He shoots with all L glass and was amazed with the sigma. Interestingly, the canon L was back focusing as much as the sigma was front focusing, and he had not noticed until we measured with a tripod and focus chart.

Pros: Easily Interchangeable, Nice Bokeh, Durable, Rugged, Consistent Output, Strong Construction

Other Comments: I was scared after reading reviews that it has some back focus problem... but it was fine! Plus, if there's any problem, you can always return and get a new one.

5 out of 5 stars   Crisp images - nice bokeh - great price

Review submitted for Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR (SG50F14EOS)
Pros: Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction
Cons: Heavy, Big
Other Comments: I wanted a lens that took in more light and didn't break the bank. This is it. The bokeh is beautiful. The range of depth of field is very good. When opening up depth of field, everything is sharply in focus. This lens feels more solid that the kit lens that came with the Canon T2i and the 50mm 1.8 I use regularly. I wanted this to be my walkaround lens and it is just a bit bulky (especially compared with the Canon 50mm 1.8 it is replacing). But it isn't too bad... probably just take some getting used to. Very happy with studio shots and the outdoor shots. I'm not ready to step into the price tag for the high end Canon lenses yet. If you can get this lens at a good price, it is an excellent one to add to your kit. You will definitely feel you got your money's worth.

3 out of 5 stars   taking efforts to get it right
By XZ101 on January 01, 2013

Review submitted for Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR (SG50F14EOS)
Pros: Strong Construction, Rugged, Nice Bokeh
Cons: Blurry Focus, Slow Focus
Other Comments: Boken is definitely better than canon 50m f/1.4, also slightly sharper than 50/1.4 when you get it right. You buy it for the boken and the depth of the field. Focusing is slower than canon, also not as accurate. If the shooting object can stand still, you will dig out a great photo eventually. However, regarding moving object, you can get it blurred very easily. Although this is true for all lens, it is particular worse with this lens.

5 out of 5 stars   I have too many lenses.
By XPHALCON on August 23, 2010

Review submitted for Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR (SG50F14EOS)
Pros: Fast / accurate auto-focus, Easily Interchangeable, Strong Construction, Rugged, Nice Bokeh, Durable
Cons:
Other Comments: Having the Sigma 30/1.4 and the Canon 85/1.8, I needed to fill the gap. The 85 is a bit long on my crop, but the 50 is a nice focal length. There have been many issues with Sigma's back focusing, but I've been lucky so far. Shooting at 1.4 is tricky, and sometimes best left for manual on a tripod, but otherwise color and bokeh and speed is what I desire in a lens, and this delivers.

4 out of 5 stars   Must have lense for portraits

Review submitted for Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR (SG50F14EOS)
Pros: Strong Construction, Durable, Consistent Output, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Easily Interchangeable
Cons:
Other Comments: Have kids and grandkids and this lense is great for portraits and great depth of field shots. Helped me get the effect that I was looking for. In some low light shots it was more difficult to zero in the focus on the actual spot that I wanted in focus. Overall a great lense
