5 out of 5 stars   A great Nature Sounds recorder

Pros: Works with external mics, Easy To Set Up, Easy To Control, Fast, Works Every Time
Cons: Intern mic handling noise
Other Comments: I use my PCM-D50 to record nature sounds -- birds, frogs, etc. -- using a homemade parabolic dish microphone. The recorder can be set up to power my mic thru the recorder. I don't have to provide extra batteries on the external mic itself. I especially like the 5-second pre-recording feature. Because Nature sounds from birds and frogs can start without warning, I can have the recording on pause, and unpause it the instant that I hear something worth recording, and I won't miss it because the 5-second pre-recording has already captured it. I no longer have to record everything in hope that a bird or frog will begin to sing, and then go back and delete all of the unwanted silence that was recorded while I was waiting for the next bird or frog call. The recordings are crisp and clear. There's no "wirrr" or "zip" sounds like with a mini-disc recorder where it must spin the disc and seek the next available track. Nor do I have to worry about the recorder accidentally rewriting over previously recorded tracks, losing a whole day's recording sessions. I can also use it for recording class lectures. I've made my own inexpensive furry windscreen. It's solid construction is ideal for use out in the woods. No worries about breaking a flimsey plastic device, because it's not flimsey and has an unbreakable metal housing. It has a backlit feature that I can optionally use when recording frogs or night birds after dark. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Pros: Good Quality Duplicates, Fast, Works Every Time
Cons: Difficult To Control
Other Comments: recently I was looking for a recorder that would have great quality for recording my music and for piano lessons. The previous recorder I had was a rugged Hi-MiniDisc player I bought but was difficult to use. The good news is that I found the PCM D50 and leaves my former recorder in the dust. The PCM D50 also has hardly any background motor noise or hiss unlike the minidisc recorder. I also experimented with the PCM's compression features and for me 22.05kHz/16 bit resolution sound awesometo me! (All the compression selections sound good.) I mainly record classical music whether if I'm playing it or if it's from my mp3 player. i also recorded some rock music and the quality is even better than my Hi-MD! It uses 4 AA batteries which can last up to 14 hours or more depending on how its used. Great battery life. Cons: However when I use the sync function (which comes from the menu)the player doesn't seem to divide automatically, I have to divide manually which can be frustrating and tiresome. i'm guess i'm just technically challenged and need to get some technical advice. The unit has so much more to offer than i know. I installed the included sound forge 9 software, but I have no idea how to use it even with the tutorial. I would also buy a sony memory stick card, maybe 32gbs to give ample memory for outakes and creativity. this card is a bit on the pricy though.
