Pros:
Cons:
Other Comments: Great desktop replacement. Will run any game, office software, etc. that you need to run. Toshiba's drivers are outdated on their site, but, you can get around this just by following some instructions here: [@] However, I would not make this your travel laptop. I traveled with it for two days and it nearly broke my back. Its easily over 10 lbs. in weight. It barely fits in the TSA airport bins. Most backpacks will not fit it either. Make sure you get a backpack that will do a 18.4" screen. I'm giving it 4 stars only because of the weight and the inability to use standard OEM drivers without some hassle. Other than that, its a great product.

4 out of 5 stars   Powerhouse laptop; still minor "misses"

Review submitted for Toshiba Qosmio 18.4" X505-Q896 Notebook PC Intel Core i7-740QM Processor (TBX505Q896)
Pros: Dual drives, Powerful, Only minor bloatware
Cons: Zero Linux support, Heavy, GIGANTIC power brick, No carrier for 2nd drive, Glossy screen
Other Comments: It's a great laptop for sure - but do not underestimate its weight!! This thing is heavy and the power brick for it is literally the size of a brick.I bought this model and 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD and it was still cheaper than the top-of-the-line model. The glossy screen is not my favorite, and the BIOS is not very feature-rich for such a powerful system. Have not been able to install Linux on "SSD only" configurations - no hard drives are found. The Toshiba support site is NOT AT ALL Linux-friendly. Bootable distros come up, but neither the hard-wire or the WiFi work without fiddling with the drivers. I have not had time to make it work just yet.The touchpad SUCKS - Toshiba went for aesthetics rather function - the touchpad blends seamlessly into the top of the laptop - so your fingers have no "edge" to use to orient themselves. I had to turn off the accelerations zones because of this. AND the touchpad is OFFSET LEFT. Seriously Toshiba? What the hell were you thinking? This is my single largest dislike relating to the function of the unit - between the lack of boundaries and the offset the touchpad is going to take users some real work getting used to....My only real complaint is with Toshiba support - I had THREE different support people tell me that this model came with the required adapter to add the second hard drive - and of course when I opened it up it's not there. It's a thin piece of metal (part # A000049520) and it's TWENTY FIVE BUCKS to get one on [...]. For a laptop of this price leaving this out is nothing short of criminal. The keyboard is great. Toshiba needs to do some work on their software tho - the "quick buttons" on the left of the keyboard just decided to stop working in Win7. The volume control widget in the task tray has NO MUTE FUNCTION - so when this button goes dead you have to open the volume control and lower the slider. "Soft" control buttons suck - laptop manufacturers just can't seem to understand that a button controlled by software is only as good as the software written to support it. I'd greatly prefer this device if it had old-fashioned analog buttons. I have no doubt these will NEVER work in Linux.Based on what I see on their site Toshiba does not seem overly proactive in "improving" software for their laptops once released in the wild (I have another Toshiba ~3 years old) , so my advice is "get used to it" because it's not likely to ever see any kind of functional upgrade.Overall I'm pleased with the purchase. It's great, but still has room for improvement IMO.

Pros: Great laptop, Super deal
Cons: none
Other Comments: I've been solidly in the "Portable" computing camp for years now and will not go back. needing a replacement laptop I decided to go with the x505-896. It seemed like the best deal and BuyDig's price was so low it allowed me to max out the ram, add a 2nd 750GB HD, and buy the necessary accessories and STILL come in several hundred dollars under what my local retailer wanted for this unit. Been using it for almost 30 days and it is a dream. BuyDig has won a loyal customer!

Review submitted for Toshiba Qosmio 18.4" X505-Q896 Notebook PC Intel Core i7-740QM Processor (TBX505Q896)
Pros: Great gaming notebook, Stylish, Sound quality, Powerful
Cons: Heavy, Design layout, Runs hot, Battery life
Other Comments: The Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q896 is a real head turner, with it's huge 18.4" 1080p HD display and stylish black and red "fusion finish". While I've found it to be more than adequate for portable uses such as web surfing and emailing, this is NOT your mother's laptop. With it's quad core i7 processor and Nvidia GTX 460M graphics chipset, this notebook has the power necessary to take on the most performance demanding games you can throw at it. I've been running Fallout 3 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on high detail without a hiccup. The sound quality is phenomenal with the built in Harman / Kardon speakers, and the backlit keyboard with number pad feels natural and comfortable while typing. This model comes with a Blu-ray disc, 3 USB ports, 1 e-SATA/USB combo port, Firewire, and HDMI ports. Toshiba recently released a BIOS update that increases the screen brightness to a level that will burn your retinas! I highly recommend using Nvidia's control panel to adjust the brightness and contrast to avoid the screen from looking washed out. All of this power comes at a price, and you will pay for it in portability. Toshiba clearly had a desktop replacement in mind when designing this beast, as it weighs in at over 10 lbs. The power brick is also a heavy burden, especially since the battery is only good for about 2-1/2 hours of normal use. The cooling fans seem to be inadequate to handle the heat that the processor and graphics chipset produces while gaming. Don't even try playing a graphic intensive game with this thing on your lap. In fact, I highly recommend using a notebook cooler to help disperse heat and prolong the life of the laptop. There are a few design issues that bring the Qosmio down from being a 5 star review. The media controls on the immediate left of the keyboard would have been better placed across the top. The touch pad and space bar are too narrow for the size of the display, and the power jack input on the right hand side inhibits mouse use when plugged in. The webcam is terrible for such a high end machine. The shiny black finish easily shows fingerprints and smudges. If you are a serious gamer looking for a notebook that can hold it's own with today's demanding requirements while not destroying your pocketbook, you owe it to yourself to look into the Toshiba X505 series.
