5 out of 5 stars   Good Zoom for Travel
By RustyBeach on March 13, 2014
Review submitted for Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD IF Aspherical IF Macro Lens for Nikon DSLR Mounts (TM28300VCNA)
Pros: Good image quality for a compact lens Compact size and relatively light for travel Good image stabilization Decent focal length range on FX camera body Good value Came with a lens hood and caps. Good depth of field.
Cons: Image clarity is a little off at maximum range of zoom Gyroscopic stabilization makes minor audible noise Separate auto-focus switch on lens from camera body
Other Comments: I bought this lens for a trip to Africa where I was going on work but planning to take a safari excursion to Kruger National Park. I wanted my fast (F2.8) wide-angle zoom as well as a long zoom (200mm or 300mm) for photos of animals in the game park. I had to budget for the amount of equipment to bring in my carry-on (computer, work stuff, etc) and could not bring a big lens, so this was a compromise. The lens worked well, and I got good images while bouncing around in the back of a safari vehicle. The compact size also worked well in other locations. As I do with all my lenses, I put a daylight filter on to protect the front glass, but this caused just a hint of vignette.

Pros:
Cons:
Other Comments: I had a Tamron 90mm macro and loved it, even regret it after sold it and got the Nikkor 105mm VR. I have a Tamron 24-135mm and use it most of the time and love it. Base on those experience and other reviews about how good this 28-300mm performs on D700 and almost half price than the Nikkor so I ordered it. Unfortunately, the VC didn't work and kept jumping and couldn't lock and focus, so I returned for refund.
