When I tried to use it for backing up ONLY my pictures and movies, it backed up everything I had on my computer. I removed all the items by attaching it to another computer. Then I tried again on my main computer. I did it again. If I tried to delete an item from the WD it would also delete from my main drive. OOOPS! After that it works quietly and unnoticeably in the background to keep current with your changes, new files and deletions. Haven't had to do any restorations yet so can't comment on that.
