4 out of 5 stars   Play anything on a budget

Review submitted for Western Digital WD TV Live ( WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN ) (WDBAAN0000NBK)
Pros: Flexible format support, Connections
Cons: Confusing / Bad Remote Control, Firmware glitches
Other Comments: I was originally looking at putting together a home theatre computer (HTPC), mainly because I wanted maximum flexibility in handling video and audio formats. At less than a quarter of that price and size, the WD HD TV Live is a simple alternative. I plugged in my standard def TV, an Ethernet cable, and self-powered external 320GB 2.5" harddrive, and was ready to go. The interface is not the prettiest, and it takes a while to drill through to the folders on my harddrive. The first videos I played were not scaling automatically to fill the screen, and so I loaded the latest beta firmware. This fixed the scaling, but all videos are now exactly 10% too big (perhaps this will be fixed in another update). The remote is very simple, but I miss the ability to skip a pre-defined limit (30 seconds, 2 minutes, etc.). Watching YouTube videos is an intriguing feature spoiled by the clunky on-screen search interface. WD needs to add support for wireless keyboards and mice. After two weeks of use, the unit has done fairly well. Compared to my previous media player, I love the ability to watch a program and transfer files across the network at the same time. There are still some minor glitches here and there. Fortunately, the WD TV series has great support from the company and from other users. Help is only a forum posting away.

Review submitted for Western Digital WD TV Live ( WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN ) (WDBAAN0000NBK)
Pros: Energy Efficient, Accurate Controls, Excellent HD Playback, Great Sound Quality, Pandora Internet Radio, Easy Setup, Good Remote Control, Good Power Output
Cons:
Other Comments: My 3-year old was treating our DVDs and Blu-rays like frisbees. I needed a way to play DVDs via our home theater system without the need for discs. I did a lot of research on similar solutions. I'm very pleased with my purchase of the WD HD Live. I've backed up our DVDs onto a WD Essentials 2TB external hard drive that I connect via USB to the WD HD Live. Movies playback in their 1080p and Dolby Digital formats exactly like they do via DVD. This was very easy to connect to my wireless home network and I do have WPA2 and mac address filtering. I needed to initially connect the WD HD Live via ethernet cable to auto-update to the latest firmware. You will definitely want to update the firmware right after opening it up. You will gain a number of features. I purchased a refurbished USB wireless adapter for $6 and it works great with the WD HD Live. One of the big differentiators for me was that the WD HD Live has Pandora access built in. I log into my account and have an awesome mix of music, that plays via my home theater, whenever we want. Overall, for the way I use the unit, this was a great purchase. Very pleased and would definitely recommend!!

4 out of 5 stars   WD TV Live and on Fire!

Review submitted for Western Digital WD TV Live ( WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN ) (WDBAAN0000NBK)
Pros: Easy Setup
Cons: Limited Functions
Other Comments: Setup is obviously as easy as you can get--plug an HDMI cable to your display and feed it some media (be it from your wired/wireless network; media server; USB drive). Output is true 1080p (though streaming 1080p wirelessly may be a challenge on some networks). The interface is decent, but I recommend using custom firmware and a custom OSD.

Review submitted for Western Digital WD TV Live ( WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN ) (WDBAAN0000NBK)
Pros: Easy Setup, Energy Efficient, Accurate Controls
Cons: Remote, No volume control
Other Comments: Very easy to setup and pretty reliable (update your firmware, however). I had a little trouble getting the network share to work, but after refreshing it worked fine. It's MUCH more reliable than my egreat (popcorn hour knockoff) streamer. Quality is great and it's simple to use. Pandora is a great feature but I wish it had revision3 and other only tv site access.

Pros: Easy Setup
Cons: Limited Functions
Other Comments: THIS IS GOOD STUFF BUT THE REMOTE CONTROL HAS SOMETIME MADE ME PROBLEM. THIS ARRANGE ALL MY MOVIES IN ALPHABET. BUT LACK OF SOME FUNCTION IT DOES NOT READ MY FILES NAME. IT SKIPS DIRECTLY TO "VIDEO TS", SO I HAVE TO OPEN EVERY SINGLE ONE TO SEE WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR.

Pros: Easy Setup
Cons:
Other Comments: Was easy to setup even though there was almost no literature with the unit. Just attached to an ethernet cable, used HDMI cable to my TV and the unit did the rest - it found and updated latest firmware. I'm using with an external usb device and it is excellent.

Review submitted for Western Digital WD TV Live ( WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN ) (WDBAAN0000NBK)
Pros: Good Power Output, Accurate Controls, Easy Setup, Great Sound Quality, Energy Efficient, Good Remote Control
Cons:
Other Comments: I searched the internet for a device which would allow me to stream video to my TV. I looked at every option and purchased two others which were sent back for various reasons. I have Apple TV and it works fine. I wanted something that would use an external hard drive without involving the computer to operate. I can say without reservation the WD TV Live from Western Digital is the answer and at a very reasonable price. The unit does not support NetFlix but I have that on my Blu-Ray DVD Player which works well. I would buy this again and highly recommend it to anyone that has music, video and photo they want to send to their Flat Screen TV. Quality and performance is perfect.

Pros: Easy Setup, Accurate Controls, Great Sound Quality, Good Remote Control, Good Power Output, Energy Efficient
Cons:
Other Comments: This is a great alternitive to receive free TV. I only hope with future firmware updates, the online portion will work to include, Hulu TV Netflix, and some other free TV sites as well as Boxee. You can still connect to Hulu useing Playon installed on your pc which acts as a server to your WD TV. This player is great, between my movie files and the content I recieve from the internet, I don't need cable or sat. TV.
