Other Comments: iMac System and New Hard Drives
This is information upon investing in new hardware, My Book VelociRaptor Duo w/ Thunderbolt and Drobo 5D w/Thunderbolt. I normally do not do reviews but I am very happy in what I have (time will tell).
Mac System:
iMac, 27-inch, Mid 2011, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB, OS X 10.8.3
Hard Drive Hardware:
iMac:
Seagate Barracuda 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive, Seagate, ST31000528AS, 7200, 1 TB, 32 MB Cache, SATA 3Gb/s, 2-yr warranty
External Drives:
My Book VelociRaptor:
My Book VelociRaptor Duo Thunderbolt, 2 Western Digital WD1000DHTZ VelociRaptor, 1TB 10000RPM, 64MB SATA, 6.0Gb/S 3.5,
2.5 inch within a frame that acts like a heatsink, 3-yr warranty. Amazon has the same drives w/ a 5-yr warranty. Go figure??
I have this set up as Just a Bunch of Disks mode (JBOD).
Drobo 5D Thunderbolt:
5 - Western Digital Caviar Black, 2 TB, SATA III, 7200, 64 MB Cache, 5-yr warranty, WD2002FAEX
SSD - Crucial mSATA 128 GB, M4-CT128M4SSD3
This is set up with Single Redundancy.
DroboPro:
8 - 2 TB hard drives, 4 Seagate and 4 WD (switching over to WD2002FAEX when drives fail
This is set up with Dual Redundancy
Objective:
Use My Book VelociRaptor configured as JBOD to boot system from VelociRaptor - A and use Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to keep an up-to-date clone onto VelociRaptor - B.
Initial set-up time:
CCC boot copy to iMac HD to VelociRaptor - A time: 4:20:02 for 514 GB (29.24 mb/sec)
CCC boot copy of VelociRaptor - A to VelociRaptor - B time: 1:41:34 for 513.66 GB (86.80 mb/sec)
A Quick Disk Speed Test w/ Blackmagicdesign (1 gig data) in mb/sec:

Software Used:
Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) does the drive cloning to VelociRaptor Drive - B set to back up once/day.
ChronoSync does all other backups.
Remarks:
As can be seen the Drobo 5D is the fastest w/ the SSD but it can't be used as a boot drive so this is where the MY Book VelociRaptor enters the scene doing the booting now and is very fast.
The new Drobo 5D is for my iTunes, photo, and video, and misc. It works very well with the Apple TV. The old DroboPro set up with Dual Redundancy was for my iTunes but now is used for all backups.
I am very happy with my new set-up. My iMac boots extremely fast with the My Book VelociRaptor Duo and the Drobo 5D is like "hyperspace."
Maybe Apple can offer 1 TB VelociRaptor w/ SSD. That would scream.
During the many years of my computing from Ataris to Windows and now Macs (love my Apple products) I am a firm believer in having backups.
One personal opinion is you get what you pay for in hardware and hard drives. I have had hard drives w/ 1-year warranties and have had them fail right after the warranty is up. That's why I have switched to 5-yr warranties. It depends on price and reliability. The longer one uses computers the more MBs, GBs, and now TBs one needs, especially with Backups.
