Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATLP240USB Direct Drive USB Pro Turntable (ATLP240USB)
Pros: Professional Features, Excellent Sound, Consistent, Easy To Use, Versatile
Cons:
Other Comments: audio-technica AT-LP240-USB Turntable: Perfect Marriage of Analog and Digital! First, let me state that vinyl is my music listening passion. Whenever I have the opportunity for attentive, leisurely immersion in sound, it's LPs that fit the bill. Second, CDs and MP3 files are a convenient method of transporting and playing music. Digital media makes it easy to bop around in the car, work out, or drown the cacophony of interactive modern living. I have 3,000 LPs and 1,000 CDs. My CDs are the product of industry hype and, until circa 2008, simple availability of new music. Downloads are not my thing; it's tantamount to kissing your sister. The introduction is important only to emphasize that my decision to acquire the AT-LP240-USB turntable is that, after a tremendous amount of research, it is the perfect marriage to produce the predominately rock and pop music I love in both analog and digital formats. I already own a Technics SL-1210MK5 with a customized KAB integrated cartridge. I could have acquired a quality pre-amp with an USB output. According to reliable sources, it would have been the optimum solution to reasonably faithful reproduction of my vinyl to MP3 files for loading onto my 28 gigabit Creative Vision player. But, I wanted a stand-alone turntable/USB capability to marry with a second complete home sound system. So, now I have the AT-LP240-USB Direct Drive Turntable. And I am impressed with the design, construction, and performance of the unit. For old dudes like me, it's a little humorous to read modern instruction manuals "introducing" consumers to records and players. The folks at audio-technica have done an excellent job describing set-up and features. After mating the headshell to a vintage PRECEPT PC110 cartridge, the Yamaha receiver/amplifier and MartinLogan tower speakers purred their approval of the turntable sound output. As a pure turntable, it is immensely enjoyable. Whether kicking out the jams with the MC5, strolling down Abbey Road with The Beatles, or navigating ethereal Mylo Xyloto waters with Coldplay, the AT-LP240 delivers solid, honest musical passages while flawlessly tracking grooves at 1 gram. Is the new turntable as formidable as my pampered 8 year-old Technics? Well, no; but there is over a $1,000 differential between the two units in today's market place. And, hey, the SL-1210MK5 had no premonition or aspiration to be a bridge to the digital world. Do I audibly perceive substantive differences in playback due to USB capability pollution, as some audiophile purists would insist? Well, no; but then I'm into rock and pop, and don't possess the gadgetry to scientifically demonstrate my preconceived hypotheses. All I know is that I really, really like what I hear! Switching to transferring vinyl to digital electrons, I employed the audio-technica suggestion to use Audacity software -- with a slight catch. I'm a PC operating with Windows 7. Thanks to the admirable content of the Software Guide accompanying the turntable, I opted to forego the CD download and go directly to http://audacity.soundforge.net. This was a smart move, discovering that the Audacity wizards just released v2.0.2 on 25 August 2012. Just as important, I learned that installation of Lame v3.99.3 for Windows was the only conduit for generating MP3 files from Audacity; a key revelation since my sole purpose of acquiring an USB turntable was to make my vinyl "mobile" via my MP3 player. Conceding my computer literacy quotient is about 7 on a scale of 10, I found the Audacity cockpit display to initially be overwhelming, but ultimately intuitive. Overcoming my predisposition to avoid mistakes (which would have required reading the current on-line user guide, since most YouTube demonstrations are obsolete), I simply set the turntable to LINE, plugged the USB cable into the designated ports, and played a record. Snow Patrol's Fallen Empires was the chosen test case, and the 45 rpm platter produced the desired horizontal wiggly lines in all the right places on my computer screen. After completing side 1, I saved the project in Audacity and exported it with an MP3 selection click to my computer. I played back the Audacity file on my computer desktop external speakers, just to make sure (as The Holy Barbarians sang) the music was true. One thing I like about the Audacity/Lame construct is that I do not need to establish an external library account through iTunes or similar hosts. You see, I do not need to catalog or access my converted vinyl grooves on Windows MediaPlayer; once I send the MP3 file from my PC to the Creative Vision player, the computer electrons may be released (or erased) to join the big byte in the sky. Remember that I prefer listening to music on a turntable in my home, and the transferred digital version is of no value once the birthing process has been completed. As a final note, I have not yet exploited the editing and recording variation capabilities of Audacity. The inner production engineer and DJ in me is to be released. To be truthful, I envision letting the pure vinyl recording take its course, without unnaturally boosting or suppressing the 31 bands displayed on my graphic equalizer or Audacity screen. Bottom line (FINALLY!): I strongly recommend the audio-technica AT-LP240-USB Direct Drive Turntable. I confidently endorse its use for novices and experienced vinyl music lovers. Buy it now, before people fully recognize what a wonderful value it truly is!

Pros: Outstandingly built, Easy To Use, Professional Features, Excellent Sound, Consistent
Cons:
Other Comments: i mated this unit with a at120 e/t cartridge and the sound quality is brillant, clear and full.i use a sansui 9090(totally refurbished)receiver with matching sansui 5500x speakers as my main and a set of polk studio monitors for secordaries. it makes you realize the slendid sound created by playing vinyl records. with a little effort and the right mixing enables you to create that long lost rich full sound. the new atlp240usb turntable plays as well as my long lost techics 1200.

1 out of 5 stars   LEMON LEMON LEMON
By The_Chemist on January 29, 2012
Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATLP240USB Direct Drive USB Pro Turntable (ATLP240USB)
Pros: No Frills, Sleek Looks
Cons: Motor Cogging, Poor Quality Control
Other Comments: I ordered this AT-LP240 because of its sleek looks and styling. I wanted a turntable that could play LPs and 78 RPMs. I wanted no excessive frills just a quality manual turntable. I got anything but... When I first received the AT-LP240 in early December, I thought that I noticed the strobe going very very slowly counterclockwise on 33 and 45. I thought that this was just my imagination - after all, this turntable is quartz locked, it has to be exactly on the correct speed. Sometimes when you move while you are viewing the strobe it will appear as if the dots move. Finally in mid January, I finally bought a 78 rpm cartridge. I installed it on a separate headshell set the tracking force with a digital gauge and was ready to listen to my first 78 RPM record. I pressed 33 and 45 at the same time to set the AT-LP240 to a 78 rpm speed. Now I could see for sure that the strobe was moving counterclockwise, meaning that this turntable is running slow. It wasn't my imagination. I pressed 45 and noticed the strobe moving ever so slightly counterclockwise then I pressed 33 and noticed the strobe moving counterclockwise as well but it is barely perceptible at the 33 speed. Unfortunately there is no way to adjust the speed. This turntable has a manufacturing defect and runs slow on all speeds. The problem is magnified by the faster speeds. When you get to 78 it is really obvious. I checked the turntable with my KAB USA strobe and verified the problem. Apparently Audio Technica relies on the tolerances of all the electronic components being exact. The accumulation of error within the electronic tolerances leads to an incorrect speed at the platter. Now you would think that this would have been checked at the factory before it was shipped to a retailer for sale - NOT! Very poor quality control. Now my dilemma is that I wasn't sure about this problem until 2 weeks after my 45 day return policy was up. I'll have to call BuyDig.com and see if they'll have mercy on me and allow me to exchange this defective unit for another (hopefully working this time).

4 out of 5 stars   Bring old LP's back to life

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATLP240USB Direct Drive USB Pro Turntable (ATLP240USB)
Pros: Professional Features, Quality components, Easy setup, Consistent, Easy To Use, Versatile, Great sound, Excellent Sound, Solid construction
Cons: Only 16-bit digital outpu, No hinge on cover
Other Comments: I researched this item as the best for my use. The price at Beach Camera was the best by far. I have an old LP collection that I want to listen to and convert to CD for my grandchildren. I have a very keen ear for sound and this is a great turntable. It connected to my Dennon amp with no problem. I am a little disappointed that it only has a 16 bit output but that is on paper. The actual results are more than I expected. I had forgotten how good records sounded. The software provided excellent tools to remove hiss, pops etc and easily converted the sound tracks to wav and mp3 files.

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATLP240USB Direct Drive USB Pro Turntable (ATLP240USB)
Pros: Consistent, Good sound quality, Versatile, Easy To Use, Removable headshell
Cons: Heavy difficult to move, Cheap interconnect
Other Comments: Plan to use it to record my records to MP3's. Surprised at the good sound quality so am also using it to play records. Holds its own in comparison to my more expensive audiophile turntables. It is heavy to move when I want to record. Otherwise, no real cons that would keep anyone interested in a turntable to record their record collection or listen to their record collection.

4 out of 5 stars   GOOD SOUND FOR THE MONEY
By Esharp on November 23, 2011

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATLP240USB Direct Drive USB Pro Turntable (ATLP240USB)
Pros: Consistent, Easy To Use, Excellent Sound
Cons:
Other Comments: After a 25 year absence from analog playback, I had the chance to buy a used record collection and went for it. Since I was unsure of my level of commitment to vinyl, I decided to buy an inexpensive turntable to try it out. I settled on the Audio-Technica AT-LP240-USB from BuyDig. After adding a Dynavector 10x5 High Output MC cartride, a Herbie's Audio Lab 3.7mm thick Way Excellent turntable mat, and a Ray Samuels Nighthawk Phono Stage I am surprised how good this turntable sounds. It's simple and straightforward to setup using a Technics cartridge setup tool, and it produces very decent sound quality. I'm working my way through my new record collection, and so far am very happy with my purchase. It's a bargain at the price - solid, attractive, non-tweaky, and very decent sounding.

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATLP240USB Direct Drive USB Pro Turntable (ATLP240USB)
Pros: Well-made, Easy To Use, Excellent Sound, Professional Features
Cons:
Other Comments: I enjoy listening to records at home, as well as converting my collection to CD and NP3 format. The ATLP240 is a well-made turntable, and after set up it easily surpassed my expectations for a table at this price. Looks great, sounds great, and it is very easy to use. I am very pleased with this product! For recording via USB, however, I was disappointed in the Audacity software, and use another program for this purpose. This product is a wonderful step up from my previous USB turntable!

5 out of 5 stars   Beautiful Table, Quality Sound
By 12x12 on October 31, 2011

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATLP240USB Direct Drive USB Pro Turntable (ATLP240USB)
Pros: Consistent, On-board amp, Excellent Sound, Professional Features, Easy To Use, Clean design, Tightly packaged, Easy Set-Up, Feels well built, Versatile
Cons: No spot to store 45 adapt, No auto-return
Other Comments: Wanted a turntable that looked nicer than the typical DJ style decks, but can't afford the prices of nicer looking high end tables. Also didn't want a straight tone-arm that is on other similar priced tables- I've always had some inner groove distortion with straight arms. Not to mention I've never found the aesthetics of those brands pleasing. I also did not need or want a pitch slider because they've gone bad on other tables I've had. The USB for MP3 recording was just a bonus (haven't used it yet, but plan to). This was a breeze to set up, sounds excellent, and looks beautiful! I do feel I got more than my money's worth on this 'table. I put an Ortofon Pro S cart on it- the sound is incredible. I'm planning to get a new Shure cart or possibly an AT440MLa for nicer records since the Ortofon tracks heavier than I prefer.

Other Comments: I was going to buy a belt drive audiophile table but bought this unit instead. great price , great performance. very happy. the audiophile tonearms did not offer fast cartridge changes whicj I prefer. I actually returned a Music Hall table because it was so cheap and "plasticky". the Audio Technica is nice and heavy (25lbs) and screams quality.

Other Comments: My husband wanted this turntable for his birthday. His recent interest in records spurred this desire. He did his research, and he decided on this one. I came packaged sufficiently. He set it up as soon as he opened it. Although he's very technical, he had a hard time setting it up at first. Once it was set up, however, he began enjoying it right away. Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATLP240USB Direct Drive USB Pro Turntable (ATLP240USB)
Pros: Looks great holds setting
Cons: Not Consistent, Feedback at high volumes, Customer service none
Other Comments: I tried rating this item earlier and it's a good thing the rating didn't take because I overrated it. I have 30 plus years directly rated to sales set-up and repair of high-end audio equipment and dealing with tech support. This is the first time I have experienced extremely poor customer support by the manufacture. [...]. I think this product is overrated in the down force area using the latest set-up equipment and test LP's, the tracking is very good anti skate set perfect azimuth dialed in perfect and all setting held rock solid the major problem is down force. With a 6.5 gram cart it was impossible to maintain below 1.7 of down force without the danger of the counterweight falling off. The turntable is rated supposedly for up to a 8.5 gram cart. Tech support was very condescending repeatedly suggesting that the counter weight was incorrectly installed, only two ways this could possibly be installed neither could get below 1.7 grams . Great looking table and as long as you don't need customer support or use a cart above 6.5 grams with below 1.7 grams of down force you'll be ok. The only audible flaw is at high volumes is a slight feedback. I purchased this for several reasons main being to keep my wife away from some my $5K turntables to play her old LP's second to transfer a few albums to digital and last I was always like trying something new. bottom line I have no complaints playing at low to mid volume levels and using a lightweight cartridge or using a lighter headshell and mounting hardware. I used a record cleaning machine weighted record clamp and weighted outer ring clamp. high-end digital down force scale and a digital level where used as well as a cartridge alignment protractor azimuth meter and test LP's to calibrate set-up. Poor factory customer service and extremely condescending they made no effort to help. I welcome the manufacture to contact me at any time or any subscriber. I would have given this table higher marks if it had performed well at higher volumes despite the horrible customer service. maybe not an issue on a less expensive system .

5 out of 5 stars   best turntable deal so far
By Tommygun on June 23, 2011
Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATLP240USB Direct Drive USB Pro Turntable (ATLP240USB)
Pros: Consistent, Excellent Sound, Professional Features, Easy To Use
Cons: None
Other Comments: This is one of those rare occasions where you get more than what you pay for. Heavy duty construction great balance of style and performance expected from a high-end turntable costing hundreds more. Once I mounted my cartridge (Shure v15 IV) set the down force 1.25 grams and dialing in anti skate and then fine tuning with a test record a fifteen minute set-up at most. Tools I recommend are a good down force scale and an audio obstacle course/ test record and a bubble level record clamp. If you have any concerns setting this table up well don't it's a fifteen minute set-up and mounting the cartridge is the hardest part. To fully enjoy vinyl records you will need to thoroughly clean your records I use a VPI HW-17 Record cleaning machine. Turntable quickly and accurately locks on to speed verified with my strobe meter. Why buy high-end vintage when this table gives you excellent sound quality without worrying about breakage. The Audio Technica on the record mat is cheesy so I flipped mine so that the lettering is not seen. Plinth looks great, fantastic looking arm that adjusts up or down for different thickness mats and vinyl records is nice best feature is the heaviness which is a big plus.
