4 out of 5 stars   A Good Shotgun

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATR-55 Condenser Shotgun Microphone - ATR6550 (ATR6550)
Pros: Lightweight, Great Sound Quality, Easy To Use, Durable
Cons:
Other Comments: I use this mike to record a class/seminar, the speaker being about 15 ft. away. The room has a high ambient noise level which this mike is capable of minimizing. If you can live with the short unbalanced cable, you can't beat the mike for the price.

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATR-55 Condenser Shotgun Microphone - ATR6550 (ATR6550)
Pros: Lightweight, Easy To Use, Great Sound Quality
Cons:
Other Comments: As advertised, I use it as an external mic for my camcorder. Mostly for interviews in the style of news reporters on location. I get awesome sound quality from this mic. Very crisp and clear. Very affordable! The cable is relatively short due to fact that it was actually meant to be mounted on top of your camera so I have to use an extension cord to make it longer. (Not a problem). I only wish the 3.5mm plug was stereo so it can capture audio on both left and right channels.

Pros: Great Sound Quality, Lightweight, Easy To Use
Cons:
Other Comments: I am about to record a short movie to use as my portolio for graphical design/effects. I needed a shotgun microphone and I think I made a good choice when choosing the model and the company. So far it's working perfectly and I am vey happy with my purchase.

2 out of 5 stars   decent for price, but not a great mic
By teacher Steve on March 10, 2011
Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATR-55 Condenser Shotgun Microphone - ATR6550 (ATR6550)
Pros: Easy To Use, Lightweight, Inexpensive
Cons: Unreliable, No LED indicator light
Other Comments: I used this product to improve the sound on a Sony digital-8 camcorder, as its built-in mic grabs too much ambient sound. I needed a more direct pick-up pattern on the mic. The results were a very clear sound. Much better than the built-in mic from the camcorder. It's light and very inexpensive for a shotgun, so that's a plus. It was used on a handmade boom pole (painter's pole) and produced good results. However, the good results did not last. Mic stopped working after about a year. I recorded what I thought was great footage only to realize that it didn't include any sound. Not reliable unless you're using it as a back-up, or in addition to another mic. Also, no LED indicator means that you may forget to turn it on/off. On the plus side, it DOES come w/a lifetime warranty, which you always hope you never need. It's highly inconvenient to have to send this away to get it repaired/replaced.

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATR-55 Condenser Shotgun Microphone - ATR6550 (ATR6550)
Pros: Simple Use, Durable, Great Sound Quality, Lightweight
Cons:
Other Comments: I am a retired photographer and filmmaker. I still produce product and training videos for commercial/industrial companies. The locations are often hostile for both video and audio. I've used the Audio-Technica ATR55 Condenser Shotgun Microphone several times in the 6 weeks I've had the unit. I have been very happy with it so far. I don't use the mic on-camera. It is usually boomed or on a stand to get the mic close to the sound source. I generally use it on the "Normal" setting. When I have used it in "Tele" mode, it has done a good job of reaching out and recording specific sounds where it was difficult or impossible to get close to the source. The Tele mode does have a bit of a "tinny" sound, but nothing that can't be fixed in post. Everyone has different equipment needs and expectations. I guess that explains the diversity of opinions. Being retired, I don't have the equipment budget I used to have. I needed a new shotgun mic and for [$] I figured the ATR55 was probably worth a try. I obviously can't speak for its longevity, but so far it has performed very well. In "Normal" mode it will give you good usable audio that can be tweaked if necessary in your editing program. As one other reviewer noted, the "Tele" mode is just an added bonus should you choose to use it.I would buy the ART55 again and would certainly recommend it to others if, as with all equipment, it is used properly.

5 out of 5 stars   Best bang for the money

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATR-55 Condenser Shotgun Microphone - ATR6550 (ATR6550)
Pros: Great Sound Quality, Lightweight, Simple Use
Cons:
Other Comments: I had different mics, including the big names, and I was amazed of the quality this one can deliver specially for the money you pay. Well worth it, if you don't want to spend over 250-400 this is a good investment. I don't know the durability yet, but for what I paid I don't care too much. Much better than the GL2 camcorder mic..
I recommend this product Yes, I recommend this product
