Review submitted for Canon EF 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 Image Stabilizer USM Lens (Imported) (CN100400ISLP)
Pros: 100-400 range, Image Quality, Build
Cons: Heavy
Other Comments: I have a 70-200mm F/2.8 IS on a 7D. I love the image quality and speed, but I always wanted something a little longer to capture my boys' football games. After researching and saving for a long time, I finally decided to get the 100-400. I was very reluctant at first because of a lot of mixed reviews..."f4.5-5.6 is too slow"; "dust pump" and "some copies have soft image quality." In the end it was a decision between the 300F4.0, 400F5.6 and the 100-400. I'm extremely glad that I got the 100-400 and wanted to comment on my original hesitation: - "too slow." In the last couple of weeks, I've shot over 1000 football pics. I never felt it was inadequate for field sports. I'm sure a 400 f2.8 is super fast but it is also 5x more expensive. - "dust pump." So far no dust. I always have a b+w uv filter on it. - "soft IQ." My copy is sharp as a tack, even wide open. In addition, AF is very accurate and relatively fast. the 100-400 range is fantastic. I realized I would have missed a lot of shots if I went with the 300 or 400 primes. As the action got closer, having the ability to zoom back down helps you get the shot. The lens is heavy, but no more so than the 70-200 2.8. You will get lots of attention walking around with it. Lastly, the push-pull zoom is different, but I don't think it is difficult to operate once you are familiar with it. It is relatively quick, but the tightening ring takes a couple try to get the right tension. In summary, I'm extremely please and only wished I wouldn't have let the mixed reviews slow my decision. If you need the 100-400 range, I would not hesitate getting this lens.
