I bought the 16-35 f2.8 L II and found that it may have better color correction at the edges and a pleasing color overall which, so far, I do not think is due to diffraction limited blending of contrast. The 16-35L II is much harder to get a good auto focus on the 5D Mk-II if I am in a hurry. I decided to sell the 17-40L and stick with the 16-35L II. It is only because I think I can mitigate the auto focus issue with patience which the 17-40L did not require. I'm not just talking about slow shutter speeds and f2.8 exposures. The first copy of the 16-35L II I had missed the focus on all points in the frame occasionally (like it focused beyond infinity) to the point of absurdity.
