5 out of 5 stars   Great prime bargain
By Paul on December 22, 2015
Review submitted for Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (CN2818)
Pros: I grew up with manual focus prime lenses so the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 feels like home to me. I use the autofocus most of the time – it's spot on and fast, but I like to focus manually, especially with the very shallow depth of field this lens offers at f/1.8, and it has a large and very smooth focus ring right where it belongs. The lens is plenty sharp, even wide open and tack sharp after about 2.8. I also own the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 and the newer EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. Together these three give me a powerhouse combo for low light still or video photography.
Cons: Doesn't come with a lens hood, an essential with any wide angle lens for outdoor shooting. Skip the aftermarket brands and get the Canon hood. Or you can do like I did and buy twice by first getting the cheap knock-off with threads that wear out then opting for the reversible Canon bayonet mount. There is some noticeable color fringing wide open in strong light, but it mostly goes away by 2.8.
Other Comments: This lens is a little on the heavy side if you're used to the cheap plastic lenses, like the 50mm 1.8 series, but it's built like a tank, just like the old FD lenses were. My eyes are watering from the nostalgia. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars   Sharp, durable, fast lens at a good price
By Paul in Kansas on April 01, 2015
Review submitted for Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (CN2818)
Pros: This lens has been in Canon's lineup for 20 years so it's built tough. It's sharp, especially if you stop down to 2.8, but wide open it's still very good. As a camera review site said, "If you enjoy shooting test charts, simply stop down to f/2.8 where performance is excellent, or spend $1,000 on an L-series lens." I've used this 28mm f/1.8 for two years to shoot video and stills on a 60D, 6D or EOS-M (with adapter). I like the smooth, wide focus ring and simple durability and that it's much faster and smaller than any of the zooms I have in this focal length.
Cons: No image stabilization
Other Comments: If you're building a kit with fast, prime (fixed focal length) lenses and you're on a budget, you can buy three sharp, proven f/1.8 Canon lenses for the price of just about any L lens: this 28mm, the 85mm and the 50mm.

Pros: Lightweight, Nice Bokeh, Easily Interchangeable
Cons:
Other Comments: I just shot a wedding and used this lens and it fairly nice. It can't say it is blurry or really awesome in its focus. If you want to use it wide open (F1.8), you shouldn't expect to get really great focus with it when you are shooting things that are over 10ft away. Nevertheless, overall I like the lens... if its used the right way...

Pros: Rugged, Durable, Consistent Output, Fast / accurate auto-focus
Cons:
Other Comments: I use the lens for most indoor work because of its speed but because of the APS conversion (28/42mm) it makes a good general purpose lens.
