This lens is much superior in that it produces sharper images and is ruggedly constructed. I use the lens mainly for portrait work and like to shoot f/4.0 - f/8.0 maximum so the f/2.5 wide open aperture is more than adequate for me. Mounted to a Canon 5D Mark II, I use the camera's fantastic ISO capability to handle low light conditions. I don't do much macro photography, but this lens enables me to get the extreme close-ups whenever I want. I also like the deeply recessed glass which makes a lens hood practically unnecessary. I prefer prime lenses over zoom. This 50mm and an 85mm lens are my primary portrait "work-horse" lenses. I get the super-sharp focus and detail I like. I add any softening during post-processing of the images. I am very pleased with my purchase. Don't understand why Canon stopped manufacturing it. As soon as I got it opened up, I started photographing everything small inside and outside my house to get a feel for how it works. I ended up with some really great shots of a honey bee, ants, close-ups of the eye, a chickadee, sliced cabbage (cooler than it sounds), etc. For someone who doesn't know all the minute details of photographic theory, this was excellent. I just wanted to be able to get really close to stuff and photograph it - with our other lenses I couldn't get close enough for fine detail without losing the focus.
