5 out of 5 stars   "Best value for the money"
By Ryan on February 15, 2011

Review submitted for Canon Powershot SD4000 IS 10.1 MP Digital ELPH Camera (Black) (CNPSSD4000ISK)
Pros: Fits in your pocket, Large viewing screen, Worth much more money, Lots of settings, Sturdy heavy duty
Cons: None yet
Other Comments: I bought a canon sd1300 before going on vacation to replace my older sd500 and didn't like it at all. Took good pics but didn't have that many settings. So I searched for a replacement and read up on the sd4000. Thought I'd try it and so far it's been a great little camera. I'm not a professional photographer, but I do enjoy photography and this camera takes pictures on par with my digital rebel xti. It has a great feel to it and feels really study with gritty paint on it for grip, I bought the black one. Also it's a lot smaller than than I thought, 4"x1". So it'll fit in your pocket. It's a great camera to carry everywhere. It does take a little time to get used to for the manual settings. but within an hour I had it figured out. But if all you use is auto, it's simple just turn it on and shoot. Also the 720p video is super clear and has great sound. For the money I don't think you can get any better than this sd4000. I have never bought anything on buydig.com before, but they were great! I bought an extra battery for [$] and they gave me a free 4gb SD card [...] I think I'll be back to buy future electronics from them.

Review submitted for Canon Powershot SD4000 IS 10.1 MP Digital ELPH Camera (Black) (CNPSSD4000ISK)
Pros: Quality
Cons:
Other Comments: I bought this camera to replace an older Kodak digital camera. It's heavier than I expected, but the quality of photos it takes are just great. Most of the time I just use the auto function, but the other features are very nice. Still learning how to use it at this stage. I would definitely recommend.

4 out of 5 stars   Canon SD4000: top dog of point-n-shoot
By awr on December 23, 2010
Verified Purchase
Review submitted for Canon Powershot SD4000 IS 10.1 MP Digital ELPH Camera (Black) (CNPSSD4000ISK)
Pros: TOP DOG
Cons: Size limitations
Other Comments: This camera rightfully earned the 'top dog' position in most online review sites. The high-sensitivity is an earned bragging right. I'm aware of no camera (point n shoot) that can beat it. I took some side-by-side shots with a very excellent older model the SD880 canon and it's mind-blowing how much better the 4k performs. This is about my 8th Canon point n shoot. It bests the last one 2 to 1. It's just stunning how well it performs in typical scenarios; for example; my previous point n shoots will RARELY if ever choose ISO higher than 250 unless you PICK the 'high iso' mode in which case; GRAINY shots. This camera will pick up to 1600 without needing to tell it 'high iso' and they come out fine. if you pick the special case high-iso mode; it will shoot up to 6400 ISO; they will be grainy buy they will come out. I took a picture of my son illuminated ONLY by a 24inch LCD tv 8 feet away. The typical 'party' picture where normally only the front subject has any illumination is where this camera excels! when you take a picture of 3-5 people across a table (which you can because of the 16:9 aspect no problem), rather than 'all black' behind them, this camera will have a decent exposure of the background scene as well (because it will choose ISO 500 vs ISO 250), combined with f2.0 bright lens and the CMOS sensor. The camera has a phenomenal build quality; it feels like it's carved from a solid block of aluminum. in the 'con' department: i've had a handful of mis-focus issues. nothing to 'write home about' but a word of caution to check your focus before assuming it's always good. (probably a case of not paying attention to the green focus box; for example; it focused on a reflection in a TV screen and not on the screen itself). the other and biggest 'con' is a multi-parter but all related: Many other cameras will have related 'cons' as well: The camera has a large number of megapixel options but only ONE of them matches the 16:9 ratio of the screen. The problem with this is a multi-parter: • MANY of the in-camera features ONLY function with the 4:3 aspect shots (example: trim/crop/rotate). It's a huge let-down. • the 16:9 is a fantastic ratio for wide shots; terrible for tall shots (unless taking a picture of a post or a tree); it would be better to have a separate choice for each orientation. • NO sub-size options in 16:9 shape • NO 3:2 ratio size! big let-down no size that matches 4x6" standard prints! If the camera had 3:2 ratio, and the functions like trim/crop worked on 16:9 and if it had sub sizes at 16:9 ratio i would rate it 10/10 perfect score. It gets 4/5 stars due to these senseless limitation. I tried to upload 1:1 zooms of the pictures but I could only upload 2 pics so you'll have to download and zoom to 1:1 to see the detail. I held the two cameras side by side and took the pictures within 1 second of each other; both cameras set to automatic exposure. Oh almost forgot one of the KEY things about this camera and any other point n shoot that is a 'peer' or lower-end model: it's one of the very rare that has both Aperture and Shutter priority modes. It does not have full manual but you can force the 'other' with exposure compensation (eg. if you want to shoot f3.2 and 1/60th sec; set to Av mode, 3.2 and 'test' the auto speed with half-press; if it shows 1/80th sec, than boost the exposure compensation up until you get 1/60th. I have the black; it's a very interesting matt-black texture reminiscent of products from the 60s. It's a fantastic feel; part of what makes it feel so solid. One other thing: the only two pns i can think of in the same league are the canon s90 and the panasonic lx5. they are MUCH larger cameras that cost much more. This one is the only cam of it's class on earth you can comfortably put in any pocket period. The camera you can bring with you will be the one you can take a picture with; the very best camera back home in the safe will not get a good shot. So there you have it. Go buy this camera, if the limitations aren't a deal-breaker you will not do better for the price, it's impossible. -awr

Review submitted for Canon Powershot SD4000 IS 10.1 MP Digital ELPH Camera (Black) (CNPSSD4000ISK)
Pros: Easy to use, Auto setting great, Manual setting very helpf
Cons: Have found none as yet
Other Comments: I purchased this product as an all around camera to have at hand when the grandkids or our dogs do something we want to capture quickly. I also take a lot of photos outdoors in different light situations ie around a fire, on the lake etc. I am also the family giver of photo gift books so I need my photos to be sharp, of good quality, and able to be cropped. So far I am extremely happy with the quality of what I see on my computer. I have not printed any photos as yet. I will return to this site to report after printing and after the birth of our new grandchild when we start taking close ups.

Review submitted for Canon Powershot SD4000 IS 10.1 MP Digital ELPH Camera (Black) (CNPSSD4000ISK)
Pros: Excellent low light shots, Decent battery life, Small but easy to handle, I-contrast works well
Cons: Lots to figure out
Other Comments: Used as an adjunct to our SLR on a trip to Nepal. Overall very pleased - easy to use and the program (P) mode shots came out well with a minimum of fuss. Occasionally used Av and Tv modes. Battery hold in tab (orange) broke, but not needed really. I-contrast is nice - does a good job of lightening dark areas in high contrast situations. Video works well. Battery life is reasonable, not great, helps immensely to turn down the LCD brightness. Definitely have a spare battery handy, however. This camera trades off zoom for low light performance, which really is quite good at the widest zoom...very easy to take indoor shots. Raw mode might be a nice option, but really this is a small camera with not that much glass - never going to be as good as an SLR, but the small size makes for a great tradeoff.

5 out of 5 stars   Everything I had hoped for
By RosaryJim on September 24, 2010

Review submitted for Canon Powershot SD4000 IS 10.1 MP Digital ELPH Camera (Black) (CNPSSD4000ISK)
Pros: Ease of Use, Needs flash less often, Comfotable to Use, Great Low-Light Picture, Compact Size, Slow-Motion Movie Mode, 10fps Burst Pictures
Cons: Flash Overly-Bright, Hard 2 Change Settings, Cheezy Software
Other Comments: The backside-lit CMOS really does take better low-light pictures. I took several pictures that showed more detail than my eyes could see. I got some fantastic shots of the clouds and stars at night, which I have never been able to do with a point-and-shoot before. It also takes great photos indoors without the flash, which is good, because the flash is REALLY bright and has a tendency to whitewash the foreground. It's more comfortable to carry in my pocket than my phone. I take it for my daily walks to grab those beautiful or fascinating moments in nature. The only downside is that the Manual settings are hard to change-between very quickly, and it comes so very close to full manual, but stops just short, which made me feel slightly cheated, but it's really unimportant in a point-and-shoot like this one and offers far more than any of its counterparts. I love taking Panorama shots, and nearly bought the Sony because this one is still using the EXACT same PhotoStitch software that my last 3.2MP Canon had that I purchased back in 2004.

By jlarson21 on August 04, 2010
Review submitted for Canon Powershot SD4000 IS 10.1 MP Digital ELPH Camera (Black) (CNPSSD4000ISK)
Pros: Low light performance, Compact Size, HD video, Even Wife Likes It, Image Quality, Ease of Use
Cons: No Optical Viewfinder
Other Comments: This little gem is in my pocket at all times. Image quality is really very good and it's so easy to use. The ability to set shutter speed or aperture settings is great. Wish it had a little more zoom (maybe 5X) but knew it only had 3 or so going in and am satisfied with it. Printed off a 13 x 19 as a test and it was beautiful. Image stabilization works great.

5 out of 5 stars   Amazing Camera!

Review submitted for Canon Powershot SD4000 IS 10.1 MP Digital ELPH Camera (Black) (CNPSSD4000ISK)
Pros: Picture Quality, Low-light, Movie Quality
Cons: Battery life for movies
Other Comments: This is an amazing camera for ease of use and f/2.0 shots that give you a clear subject with a somewhat blurred background. This camera really excels in low light and the video quality is absolutely amazing. Buy an extra battery if you plan on taking video. Video shooting depletes the battery very quickly, but the results are stunning so a minor inconvenience overall. This is not a substitute for an SLR or even a Canon G11, but it's probably the best compact point-and-shoot for low light and movies that one can find.
