5 out of 5 stars   This is the way to go for storage.

Review submitted for Drobo 4-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800 SATA Storage Array (DR04DD10)
Pros: Easy to Use, Easy To Install, Reliable, Highly Compatible
Cons: Doesn't have eSATA
Other Comments: They make great stuff. It works, and works well. It's able to rebuilt itself while you continue to work with your data. You can pull a drive out, put in a bigger one and it just chugs along. No loss of access to your data. You can rotate drives in as bigger ones come out. Can't wait to get one with eight drives and Thunderbolt (Light Peak) some day!

5 out of 5 stars   Just storage? Power interupt & backup 2

Review submitted for Drobo 4-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800 SATA Storage Array (DR04DD10)
Pros: Quiet, Reliable, Easy To Install, Looks very cool
Cons: ITunes colored beachball, Slow, Movies colored beachball, Doesn't reach FW800 speed, Horribly confusing manual
Other Comments: From the description you'd think this was only a HDD 4 bay storage unit... and you could slap 4 - 2TB drives in it and connect it all with Firewire 800 speed! Beats USB2, right? Not so fast (literally). Well seems that this device's primary design/function was to prevent HDD failure and loss of data. I never saw any of that before I bought it. So it is a "Time Machine" or data backup device that uses nearly half of the disk space for a back up... but no ordinary backup. It somehow spreads a backup of your data across all the drives you place in it.. so if one fails you pop a new drive in its place. It also has a built in battery in case of power failure. Who knew? What did I mean about colored beachballs? Well, that's Apple's spinning colored icon for "I'm busy and you can't run or use me right now"... or you're running 15 apps on 2GB of RAM. Get ready to see them if you put your iTunes/Movies on this thing. iPhoto is fine...backups of apps and Time Machine fine, as well. I pushed 4 - 2TB SATA drives into this device and watched the lights flash green and yellow for a few moments (that's their code for don't remove or turn me off). The I added my iTunes (2400 movies, 140,000 songs and 750 TV shows.. about 1.25TB). A day later... I added iPhoto and copies of my Windoze™ and MacOS™ Apps. Then I made a 1TB partition for Time Machine™ (Apple's™ Backup app). So before I knew what this device really did I thought I'd get a full 7.29 TB out of my 4 - 2 TB drives.. nope. Try around 5.7TB. I also thought... cool I get rid of 5 external drives (and their annoying and wasteful AC adapters), clean off my desk... and move from their slow USB2 connection speed to Drobos™ FW800... one cable. Partially true: I got rid of the mess.I don't see an increase in speed... in fact.. it appears to access things slower than my stand-alone externals did. Perhaps it's because it's also busy "backing up" (it's always making tiny little Drobo™ noises) If you're a Time Machine™ user.. you know what happens when Time Machine™ starts to back up: Slow motion everything. So will I use this for my video editing? I don't think so... probably just for storing my work.OK... setting this up should be a snap. But it comes with probably the worst written, confusing manual ever written. It jumps around referring to one model and then another... seems to lack any sense of sequential learning/teaching. Luckily they have excellent customer service, and believe me you'll need to call them: To figure out what they are writing about in the manual which crams 3 different models, uses proprietary "made up" terms... (no glossary) and seems to defy logic (they state and have a pictorial showing how one can format a 8TB Drobo™ to 16TB's... I still don't get that... but the lady at customer service held my hand I somehow formatted my 8TB Drobo™ for 16TB.. though I actually (in non-Drobo™ terms) have 5.7 TB total usable storage space... confusing? Yep.But I love my clean desk... and EVERYONE says "oooo" and "aaaah" when they see it. That's the best part :-) The second "best part" is dealing with Beach Camera... what nice people!

Review submitted for Drobo 4-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800 SATA Storage Array (DR04DD10)
Pros: Easy To Install, Quiet, Highly Compatible, Fast, Reliable
Cons:
Other Comments: I configured the Drobo with two 2TB drives. In this configuration I get 2TB of backed up storage. (When I add a 3rd 2TB drive I'll have 4 TB of backed up storage.) I like the way the Drobo figures out the best way to allocate storage for optimum backup and performance. I was able to retire three external drives and move all the content to the Drobo. I use the Drobo for active files and backup. I have the 2TB configured in 2 1TB partitions. One partition is for the active files and the other for backup. I haven't implemented the Drobo Copy software yet but will. It will copy new and updated active files from the active to the backup partition. One more backup precaution will be to also copy new and updated files from the backup partition to the external drives the Drobo freed up. These will be stored off-site and swapped out on a regular basis.
