Review submitted for Garmin Oregon 550T, World Wide, Rugged 3" touchscreen with built-in 3.2 MP camera (GRORG550T)
Pros: Reliable Reception, Accurate, Quick Signal, Extensive Base Map, One Hand Control, Intuitive Menu
Cons: Difficult To Set Up, High learning curve
Other Comments: I have used the GPS for geocaching and it is great. Menus are not intuitive, have to hunt for some menus. Uses GPS terminology in the manual that has a learning curve for beginners. Still haven't found out how to make coordinates the default setting. Compass has a lot of information on the screen. This would be ideal for hiking as the street maps are too general. I bought an adapter kit but the screen is too small to use in a car without having to spend time interpreting what you are seeing.

5 out of 5 stars   I love Garmin GPS: Oregon 550T!
By Tomopie on April 29, 2010
Review submitted for Garmin Oregon 550T, World Wide, Rugged 3" touchscreen with built-in 3.2 MP camera (GRORG550T)
Pros: Intuitive Menu, Reliable Reception, Extensive Base Map, Quick Navigation
Cons:
Other Comments: I purchased Oregon 550T mainly for hiking. I have different Garmin GPS in my car. Oregon 550T is great for hiking. I sometimes hike by alone and some of the trails are not really clear. When I tag at the parking lot, I can easily come back to the tagged location. Also, this GPS has camera function and you can geotag pics to the point of location where you took. Garmin offeres a software, Base Camp, which you can download freely from Garmin web page. When you plug in Garmin Oregon 550T to your computer by USB cable, you can see topo map which is preinstalled on GPS on the computer large display. You can prepare the trail route in advance for your incoming hiking. Or you can save your trail hiking result to your computer. Only problem I have now is this free software, Base Camp, often crashes. When it crashes, I can send crash reason to Garmin right away. Sometimes, I get free software update to fix bug from Garmin. It's small size to carry, but, GPS DISPLAY is big enough to see the route, direction, average speed, evelation and so on. You can also play Geocache to search stuff near you or during hiking on the trails. It's really fun to go hiking with this GPS. Never lost!
