2 out of 5 stars   Understand its limitations before buying

Review submitted for Nikon WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter for select Nikon Digital SLR cameras (NK13186)
Pros: Remote shutter activation, compact, streams to smartphone or tablet
Cons: Locks camera settings into Auto mode, huge drain on camera battery, smart phone app somewhat buggy, esp. with iPhones, poorly written instructions on how to activate.
Other Comments: There are lots of reviews out there for the Nikon WU-1b. They all say basically the same thing, seems like; that when this thing is activated, camera settings cannot be changed at the camera or on the smartphone/tablet you are using it with. That's true, but does not show the full limitations of this device. Some reviewers have said that the work around is to preset the camera settings, then connect the device and use that way. Not so with the Nikon S1. I took a number of test shots with an S1 with the WU-1b attached. Once activated, the device locks the camera into Auto mode and ignores any presets made prior to activation. It basically reduces the S1 to a point and shoot camera. I can't say how differently it may perform with other cameras it is designed to work with (judging by other reviews, probably about the same) but with the S1, it's a huge disappointment. One more thing. When using it for the first time, plug it into your camera's mini USB port, then go into the Settings menu of your camera and look for the prompt to activate the WU-1b. After that selection has been made, then follow the instructions that came with it. I almost returned this thing, thinking I'd gotten one bad from stock that wouldn't activate. Now I wish I had.
