It is veratile enough to handle every kind of shot (video, portraits to long zoom action) without having to carry around additional lens. The tilt screen is another welcome feature as it means you do not have to be holding the camera up to your face all the time waiting for "that shot". Overall it meets my needs. I do not have an issue with image quality. It is good enough for my purposes. I use a mono-pod for long zoom so the camera's image stabilization is sufficient--Canon SX30 has best IMO. Only drawbacks so far: Lag time for video capture to begin. Lag time to save continuous shooting to memory.
