4 out of 5 stars   Nikon P7000 for Traveling
By RustyCameras on February 24, 2011

Review submitted for Nikon Coolpix P7000 10.1 MP Digital Camera with 7.1x Wide Zoom-Nikkor ED Lens (NKCPP7000)
Pros: Zoom has good range, Many options, Good low-light capability, Video sound is good, Excellent macro photos, Quality photos, Fast Focus, Screen is very sharp, Convenient flash, Videos are decent, Manual focusing works
Cons: A little slow on 2nd shot, Smallish shutter release, Touchy zoom speed, Need to study manual, Awkward strap eyelets, Flash a little weak
Other Comments: I bought the P7000 as a travel camera for work and leisure as an upgrade to a Nikon 995. I have a D70 that is too bulky for most travel. The P7000 takes very sharp photos, and I liked the close-up macro capability, especially when documenting samples during factory or field visits. The image quality is excellent, though I feel the need to slightly push the exposure by +1/2 or +1 to get better detail in the shadows. I have a couple of external Nikon flashes (SB-25 and SB-800). The SB-25 did not work at all; the flash would not fire. The SB-800 was not automatically recognized by the P7000 on "auto", but when I manually set the P7000 to one of the flash modes, it worked fine. The P7000 seems to set the "auto ISO" by metering without the flash, so it is good to manually set the ISO to avoid grain in the resulting images. I found it necessary to study the manual to reach some of the subtle features that weren't obvious to me from the camera's menus. Overall, I am pleased with the camera.

5 out of 5 stars   Super versatile camera

Review submitted for Nikon Coolpix P7000 10.1 MP Digital Camera with 7.1x Wide Zoom-Nikkor ED Lens (NKCPP7000)
Pros: Macro, Focal distance, Lots of external controls
Cons: Speed
Other Comments: I've hiked for a week in Patagonia and I enjoyed the versatility of this camera. I ended up taking a lot of macro photos of the flora and I was super impressed with the result - sharp photos even in poor light conditions. This is the perfect camera for backpacking/hiking and an excellent SLR backup. Even though it is not very fast at processing raw I did not find this to be a serious issue. I'm actually between a 4 and 5 just because I had a problem with the lens cover not opening completely and I had to send it back for repair. I blame the crazy Patagonian winds for that.

Review submitted for Nikon Coolpix P7000 10.1 MP Digital Camera with 7.1x Wide Zoom-Nikkor ED Lens (NKCPP7000)
Pros:
Cons:
Other Comments: Nikon finally fixed those things people did not like about the P90, P100 and L110. Lens protecting mechanism is a plus. Quality photos with good sharpness and color. Intuitive controls. Separate battery charger allows you to shoot with a backup battery while recharging the original battery. Have not used movie function yet. It is a bit pricey, but I believe it is the best quality point and shoot camera available now.

5 out of 5 stars   Best Automatic Camera for Me

Review submitted for Nikon Coolpix P7000 10.1 MP Digital Camera with 7.1x Wide Zoom-Nikkor ED Lens (NKCPP7000)
Pros: Excellent feature set, Excellent Image Quality
Cons: Can't process RAW profile
Other Comments: I missed a lot of interesting shots because I didn't like to carry my Nikon D700, with its lenses because of their size and weight. They just weren't convenient. I carry my Nikon P7000 everywhere, without hassle. The images almost match those of my big camera. The biggest drawback of this camera lies with Apple. They have yet to update iPhoto and Aperture to recognize and process the RAW file profiles of this new camera.
