I've taken it on two hikes and figured it out on the fly. I like that the lens is self covered when it is off. I had resisted rechargeable batteries, but it has lasted through two backpacks without a recharge. I did get a back up battery to carry with me so I don't miss a great photo. I wondered about the optical zoom, but it seems to work as well as my old Canon, and I don't have to worry about getting it wet if it get in the water. I noticed yesterday it also lets me know when the battery compartment isn't sealed, which is great. I would highly recommend this camera. It is still new to me, but I am very pleased so far. Olympus typically has nice colors, and this seems to do nicely. I actually bought this refurbed (just as good as new)as a birthday gift for my 5yr old daughter. She is good with things, but still only 5yrs old, so this camera should be rugged enough to last her awhile.
