Pros: Attractive Design, Fast Setup

Other Comments: This stand was just the thing to hold our new 60" tv. Love the workmanship, styling, quality of the stand. NO other tv stand in this price range can stand up to this stand. Will look at ordering other items in the future.

2 out of 5 stars   Nice in theory - poor execution
By Shameus on August 31, 2011
Review submitted for Sanus JFV60E - Dual Purpose Wide 3 Shelf A/V Cabinet, TVs up to 63" (Espresso Finish) (SANJFV60E)
Pros: Supports Weight, Attractive Design
Cons: Difficult To Assemble/Wire, Components don't fit
Other Comments: First things first - if you significantly change a product, change the product/part number too. I'm talking to you, Sanus. Apparently there is no differentiation between the older version of this model that does not accommodate the FMK056 TV mount and the newer version that does. I ordered both items here and received the older version JFV60E, so had to call Sanus for replacement parts (the 2 main shelves) and hardware (the FMK056 bracket mounting bolts and barrel nuts)[...] I received the correct shelves, but incorrect hardware. Another call [...] and I finally had the whole shebang. Proper part numbering would have avoided all this confusion and hassle. [...]When assembled the cabinet looks pretty good, but shouldn't a media cabinet be able to actually hold media components? My standard-sized Yamaha receiver was more than 1/2 inch too tall (this is not some monster receiver, just their basic low-end, 2-year-old HDMI model) to fit in the shelf space without removing a shelf (the shelves aren't adjustable? Seriously??), which then necessitated stacking the receiver onto another component. If I wanted to stack components on each other I wouldn't need a media cabinet, would I? A complete waste of space due to non-adjustable shelves. Design flaw #1.Assembly of most of the unit was straightforward and easy enough, but installing the feet was not fun. Perhaps camlocks instead of looooong wood screws might ease installation (and confidence in the strength of the feet). Not a flaw necessarily, but design irritation. That's #2.After finally receiving the proper parts from Sanus and the TV mount [...] I began the process of installing the mount onto the cabinet. Hint: flaws 3 and 4 coming right up...The barrel nuts used to mount the brackets to the rear of the cabinet have almost full 360-degree freedom of movement inside the cutouts, meaning that they can easily FLIP SIDEWAYS AND WEDGE THEMSELVES INTO THE MOUNTING HOLES, leaving few options for retrieval and potentially rendering the mounting points useless. I'm no slouch with a set of tools, but installing these 4 nuts and bolts took almost 2 hours - should have taken 5 minutes. And it's lucky I have a telescoping parts magnet for working on engines since that was the only tool that could retrieve the barrel nuts that became wedged. That's flaw #3.With the TV mount finally assembled and attached to the cabinet, and the TV mounted, I discovered at last that the TV wiring access holes in the mounting pillar were TOO SMALL TO PASS THE TV'S POWER PLUG THROUGH. Granted, this plug is slightly larger than a standard plug, but COME ON, IT'S A PLUG. After trying unsuccessfully to remove the cord from the TV itself then trying to think of another solution for a half hour, I finally resorted to RIPPING A CHUNK OF METAL OUT OF THE MOUNTING PILLAR big enough to fit the plug through. Ridiculous. Beyond ridiculous. Flabbergasting. This issue is specific to the FMK056, but since we're on a theme here... Also, once the FMK056 is mounted to the JFV60E, the removable rear panels on the cabinet are no longer removable. Let's call that flaw #4. So overall, assembly of this unit was sort of a nightmare, and the final result is only adequate. The lack of adjustable shelves means I can't put my components where I'd like, and the now non-removable rear panels makes wiring and wire routing a pain. On the plus side, it looks OK (though there are various flaws in the finish that I won't go into detail about...) and it hasn't collapsed or spontaneously combusted. Yet. For the cost I would have expected something that was at the very least better than something I could buy at that big-box, low price brick-and-mortar with the bulls-eye logo. If it cost 1/2 the price I would still be frustrated with the design issues, but I wouldn't feel as though I'd been robbed. Sanus? Should be Shame-us.
