4 out of 5 stars   Almost perfect

Review submitted for Sony PCM-M10 Digital Audio Recorder (Matte Black) (SNPCMM10)
Pros: Compact, Light, Low Distortion, Easy To Use, Long battery life, Excellent Sound
Cons: Slight Capsule Imbalance
Other Comments: I bought the PCM-M10 to capture Japanese public announcements (transportation, commerce, etc.) for pedagogical purposes. With one caveat it performs flawlessly. The unit is small and light, fitting a shirt pocket perfectly and being easy to hold and operate with a single hand. The five-second pre-record buffer is an absolute must for my uses, allowing ample time to identify an interesting announcement and begin recording. In the two weeks I have had the device I have made recordings totalling several hours and have not missed a single interesting event. A status light on the remote control makes cueing and initiating recordings easy without having to look at or handle the device directly when inconvenient to do so. Contrary to several reviews that I read before purchasing, handling noise during recording with the built-in mics has not been an issue at all (with appropriate care in handling the device) and for me the interface is easy to navigate and use. Sound quality is good with the built-in mics, and very good when using external mics with plug-in power. The pre-amps are clean and have very low noise. A pair of full-range in-ear microphones (Sony ECM-TL3), connected to the PCM-M10 via a stereo to L-R dual-mono "Y" cable, produces spectacular three-dimensional binaural recordings. The device also makes a very competent personal music player, driving both low- and high-impedance headphones with ease. With a MicroSD card full of music there is no need to carry both the PCM-M10 and another personal music player. Battery life is unbelievable: after nearly two weeks of daily use I am still only half way through my second set of NiMh rechargeable AA batteries. The only issue I have is a several-dB imbalance between the built-in capsules that clearly exceeds the 1dB of matching claimed by Sony. (The channels are perfectly matched when using an external mono mic, so it is not a pre-amp issue.) Others seem to have had this experience too, from what I have read in various recording forums, and reports do exist of replacement PCM-M10 units not suffering from the same capsule imbalance. This issue is the only reason I feel it necessary to rate the unit 4 stars instead of 5.

Review submitted for Sony PCM-M10 Digital Audio Recorder (Matte Black) (SNPCMM10)
Pros: Versatile, Easy To Use, Low Distortion, Excellent Sound
Cons:
Other Comments: I use the M10 to digitize my vinyl collection. It's much handier to use than my PC and has better audio quality than a sound card. I also like to listen to the WAV files for my personal music instead of MP3. The battery life is great!

Pros: Easy To Use, Excellent Sound, Powerful, Low Distortion, Versatile
Cons:
Other Comments: Literally a recording studio in your pocket! Except it requires no tape, no disc, no line cord, and for many applications, no microphones! It is capable of phenomenal sound in any format and at any level of quality you desire, including 24/96 PCM audio, the quality standard of the professional audio world. All this comes at a very affordable price.

Review submitted for Sony PCM-M10 Digital Audio Recorder (Matte Black) (SNPCMM10)
Pros: Powerful, Versatile, Easy To Use
Cons: Weak speaker audio
Other Comments: I use the recorder for all types of events including meetings to full band performances. I was disappointed with the volume of the playback sound from the built-in speakers. The playback is barely audible unless held right up to your ear. I even returned the first unit because of this and the replacment unit was the same. The sound is great when using headphones,
