Other Comments: This lens is built like a tank, and feels like a quality item. At the 12mm end of the zoom, the image is pretty sharp, with good contrast, from edge-to-edge, even at f/4, except for maybe the outer ~5% where it goes a little soft. Still, a very nice, perfectly acceptable, image overall. There is some chromatic abberation visible on high-contrast edges, which is at its worst near the edges at large apertures, but it improves a little as you stop down. This is not unusual for many lenses in this price range, and I don't regard it as a problem with this lens. At the 24mm end of the zoom, the images seem to have a little less contrast and are a little on the soft side, but still very acceptable in my opinion. Unfortunately, with the copy of the lens that I received, the image gets progressively and unacceptably fuzzier from left to right, at the 24mm end of the zoom range. The softness on the right side improves as you stop down to smaller apertures, but never really gets acceptably sharp until about f/11. This type of problem is likely not a result of poor design, but more likely due to an alignment error during assembly, or shipping damage. I will be returning the lens because of this issue, but I would not let my experience dissuade anyone from buying this lens, because the one you get may not have this issue. Lens flare is another concern for me, but it may not be an issue for you. I like low-light/nighttime photography, and bright light sources like street lights produce very noticeable lens flare in the image. (For comparison, even the inexpensive Canon 55-80 kit lens does not produce any noticeable flare at all in the exact same situations.) Overall, I think the Tokina 12-24 zoom is a very nice lens, and a good value. If mine had not had the defect at the 24mm end of the zoom, I would have been happy to keep it, despite the flare.
