It is permanently hooked up via USB. It runs in the background and you don't really notice it. I notice the light on the front flashes everytime I add to my hard drive. This assures me it is indeed working and updating itself corresponding to what I do. I have an older model which works fine also. I got this because of the automatic back-up capability.
