Powerful 18x Zoom and 28mm Wide-angle Lens -

  • 28-504mm LEICA DC Lens in a Compact Body
The DMC-FZ18 features a 28mm wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with 18x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 28-504mm) in a compact body. The bright, large-diameter lens with f/2.8 to 4.2 aperture has minimal distortion and captures images with corner-to-corner clarity. The lens unit comprises eleven elements in eight groups, with two ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lenses and three aspherical lenses, including a dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens, to achieve high optical performance while maintaining compactness. This lens gives you all the power and flexibility you need to take remarkable telephoto, wide-angle, or macro shots, and dramatic portraits with a softly focused background.
  • Powerful 18x and up to 28.7x Extra Optical Zoom
The 18x optical zoom(35mm equivalent: 504mm) lets you capture dynamic images of sports action, animals in nature, and any subject that you can't get close to. Plus, the Extra Optical Zoom uses the center of the CCD to further extend the powerful 18x optical zoom when a resolution of less than 8.1-megapixel is used. This extends the zoom ratio up to 28.7x (35mm equivalent: 803.6mm) for images with 3-megapixel resolution or less.
  • 28mm Wide-angle Shots
The 28mm wide-angle lens lets you easily capture large groups of people indoors or expansive architectural structures and scenes with dynamic width and rich perspective, even from short distances.
  • Creative Shots are Made Possible by a Powerful Zoom

    • 504mm, f/4.2 Shots with a Beautiful Soft Focus
The DMC-FZ18 take advantage of their 18x zoom (35mm equivalent: 504mm) and f/2.8 to f/4.2 aperture to a level of expression that you cannot get with conventional digital cameras. You can snap photos that capture the subject in a clear, sharp focus while giving the background a beautiful soft focus.

    • Tele Macro
When MF (manual focus) or AF Macro is selected, the Tele Macro mode automatically turns on, so you can use the 12x-18x zoom to get clear shots as close as 1 m (2 m in Normal mode) from your subject. It gives you great macro shots with beautiful, softly focused backgrounds, and a comfortable shooting posture.

    • 1cm Macro
In AF Macro mode, you can shoot all the way down to 1 cm for dynamic, creative photos of flowers, metalwork, etc.

  • A Wide-angle, Standard, and Powerful Zoom Lens- All in a Single Camera! The lens in this lightweight, compact body ranges from 28mm wide angle to 504mm zoom (both 35mm equivalents) to give you superb mobility in shooting.

    • Zoom Speed - 2 step
This function allows you to control the zoom operation in two speeds, Low and High, with the zoom lever. Rotate the lever a small amount for slow zooming, and a larger amount for high-speed zooming. This makes it easy to zoom in and out quickly when you need to, or to slow down for finer zooming control.

    • Zoom Resume
Have you ever had this happen? You've made the zoom setting, but the battery runs out and the power is cut. Or perhaps you've just taken a shot and turned off the power, and you decide you want to re-shoot at the same zoom setting. This is when you need Zoom Resume. It stores the zoom position (magnification) in memory, so you can shoot with the same zoom setting once the power is turned on again. This helps make sure you don't miss those great shooting opportunities.

Intelligent Auto Mode/ Detection Function
Tired of getting blurry nighttime portraits due to hand-shake? Had enough flash shots with washed-out faces? Hate those out-of-focus flower photos? Sometimes it's hard to know which function to use, or switching modes is a bother, so the camera just stays in Auto mode. Too often, this won't give you the sharp, clear pictures you want. Lumix's iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode solves these problems with single-button ease. The camera automatically optimizes the settings to produce beautifully sharp, blur-free pictures in typical shooting situations.

  • Shake Detection- Advanced MEGA O.I.S.
The MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) compensates for the blurring caused by hand-shake. It is now featured on the entire LUMIX range, and is highly popular with users around the world. Even slight hand-shake movement is accurately detected by a sampling frequency of 4,000 times per second, and compensated to produce sharp, clear images. The new advanced MEGA O.I.S. in the DMC-FZ18 can even detect and separate hand-shake from other types of camera movement to raise both the detection precision and corrective effect. This is true, of course, for zooming and macro shots, which are especially susceptible to hand-shake, but it also lets you shoot in dimly lit rooms or evening illumination, without a flash, to preserve the mood. In short, it lets anybody take beautiful, blur-free shots with ease.

  • Motion Detection- Intelligent ISO Control
The Intelligent ISO Control function, made possible by the Venus Engine III, detects subject movement and automatically adjusts the ISO setting and shutter speed to best suit the movement and light conditions. When it detects subject motion, it automatically raises the ISO setting and increases the shutter speed to prevent motion blur. On the other hand, when the subject is still and no movement is detected, it takes beautifully natural photos with a low ISO setting. The sensitivity can be raised to a maximum of ISO 1600, or you can set it to a limit of ISO 400 or ISO 800. Have you ever mistakenly used a high ISO setting to take a photo of a subject standing still? If so, you may remember the noisy, grainy result. Or, if you have tried snapping a moving subject at a low ISO setting, your photo was probably spoiled by motion blur. Intelligent ISO Control gives you stunning images with ease because there is no need for complicated settings.

  • Face Detection
The new Face Detection function in the DMC-FZ18 detects faces for up to 15 people in the frame and simultaneously and automatically optimizes the focus and exposure settings. It prevents the blurry faces that happen when the camera focuses on an item in front of or behind the subject, and keeps faces from appearing dark when shooting indoors or against the light source. The DMC-FZ18 does all of this automatically. Once the camera detects a face, Auto Tracking AF follows it even when the subject moves around. This makes it easy to capture the smiling faces of active children. The DMC-FZ18 also takes beautiful portraits thanks to this intelligent function.

  • Scene Detection
When the camera's in iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject. With the Intelligent Scene Selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.

Venus Engine III
Panasonic's advanced multi-task image-processing engine, Venus Engine III, provides high-speed response. It also suppresses noise without lowering resolution, to produce beautiful images. This engine also features low energy consumption despite its high performance. Venus Engine III in the DMC-FZ18 allows high-sensitivity recording up to ISO 1600 at full resolution. The noise reduction system is also greatly improved while maintaining high resolution. It removes noise at the processing stages in series. First, critical noise is roughly undraped and chromatic noise and luminance noise are separated. The chromatic noise, which has a greater effect on picture quality, is then selectively suppressed to a substantial degree.

  • ISO 1600 with Full Resolution or ISO 6400 in HIGH Sensitivity Mode
The DMC-FZ18 lets you set the maximum sensitivity in seven steps from ISO 100 to ISO 1600, or Auto, for 8.1-megapixel full-resolution shooting. Plus, the maximum ISO sensitivity in the High Sensitivity mode setting has been increased to ISO 6400. In addition to giving you blur-free shots of active children and pets with indoor lighting, the DMC-FZ18 lets you shoot in nearly total darkness with its ISO 6400 sensitivity. When using the High Sensitivity mode, the built-in flash reaches as far as 24 meters, to capture clear images even in dim lighting.

  • High Speed Reponses
The DMC-FZ18 slashes the release time lag to 0.005 second minimum by increasing both its circuit speed and the point at which it detects the shutter release signal. The shutter interval is also shortened to around 0.7 second minimum. This makes Lumix an extremely quick, responsive camera. It lets you capture images comfortably even at a moment's notice and is a pleasure to use.

  • Fast Startups
Even with the 18x optical zoom, the DMC-FZ18's startup time is only 1.5 seconds, which is 0.3 second faster than our previous model. This makes sure you won't miss sudden shooting opportunities.

  • Low Energy Consumption
Despite the significantly increased performance of the camera, the Venus Engine III consumes only 80% of the power utilized by the Venus Engine II and is able to achieve a longer battery life of approx. 400 pictures on a single charge.

Easy Manual Operation

  • Advanced Scene Mode
The Mode Dial lets you easily select the new iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode, the popular FZ-series PAMS Mode, or the Direct Printing Mode for direct printer connection. There are also separate Modes for the frequently used Portrait, Sports, Scenery and Night Scenery scene modes in the Mode Dial. What's more, the DMC-FZ18 features the Advanced Scene Mode for more detailed settings. This lets you precisely adjust the settings for each situation. Just select "Creative" to manually set the aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity.
