10x43 DCF SP Binoculars
Clear field of view, Good weight, Good feel in hands, Quick Focus
Tight focus knob, Distortion at edges
I bought the Pentax 10x43 DCF SP binoculars to be my higher resolution, higher magnification binoculars to be used in birding, hiking and general wildlife viewing. The image quality overall is very good to excellent and comparable to high-end binoculars across most of the lenses. There is distortion towards the edges, and it is variable between the right and left objective. The clarity across the majority of the lenses (90%) is so good, however, that they proved extremely bright and clear both in daylight and in observing the moon, planets and stars at night. The eye relief is good - not great. It is very adequate for eye glass wearers (like me). The binoculars feel very good in the hand, and have a good weight. They are not heavy, but not so light as to make them hard to hold still. One unanticipated problem is that although the focus knob is very precise and allows easy adjustment even when birding in varied conditions, it is a bit stiff. While birding over about three hours during the winter and wearing gloves, by index finger began to get a bit sore due to the effort required for constant adjustment to focus on many different birds at different distances. The strap is a bit lacking being a simple nylon web strap with no padding. The case is very simple nylon but I find it durable and adequate. The objective covers are permanently attached and I find them easy to use. The rain guard is fine.Overall, these are a very good pair of binoculars and I am quite pleased. The glass is not as clear as my old Leicas, but it is pretty comparable across the majority of the lenses. For binoculars in the middle of the price range, they are a very good deal. Beach Camera's price was excellent at [$].
