5 out of 5 stars   I want to sew more now

Verified Purchaser
Pros: Easy To Use
Other Comments: Was fighting with my Mom's old Viking. Finally gave up. Very easy to use and more functions than I will probably use, but nice to have just in case. Want to sew again!
I recommend this product Yes, I recommend this product

4 out of 5 stars   Good general purpose machine

Review submitted for Singer 7470 Confidence Electronic Sewing Machine (SNG7470)
Pros: Ease of operation, Useful deco stitches, Built in Alphabet, Well written manual
Cons: Plastic bobbin carrier, Bobbins not in stores, Light too dim
Other Comments: I received this machine as a gift last year. While I was not seeking a new machine, I must say it is easy to thread & start sewing right away. It has a built in needle threader which I thought I'd never learn to use. Once I figured that out, I have to say it's a plus. The bobbin carrier is part plastic, which means it may (or may not) wear out and have to be replaced at some point. On older machines, this part is all metal, and rarely do they wear out. It is advised to only use plastic bobbins rather than metal to avoid excessive wear on the bobbin case. I do not know whether it has any plastic gears. As before, metal is better for long term use. I believe that sewing machines should far outlive their owners, but that's because I have so many machines that are older than I and they work great. The light on this machine is dim, dim, dim! Plan to have an extra gooseneck lamp available if you want to see what you are doing. The manual is well written, and you can actually find what you are looking for in it. This is nothing to sneeze at. It takes a 15J bobbin, which is not readily available in stores. Now, I live out in the toolies, so if you are in a big city where there are real sewing machine stores, this may not apply to you. Bobbins can be purchased on the internet from a variety of sources, so it's not as if you can't get them. Like most machines on the market, it does not come equipped with the feet you will want to use for quilting. You will want a good 1/4" foot, darning foot, ditch foot and maybe a walking foot. Having added the first two to this machine, I can get a nice 1/4" seam without moving the needle, and am able to do some nice free motion work with the darning foot without adjusting the tension at all. You do have to remove the extension table/ accessory box to get to the feed dog drop lever. While this is mildly inconvenient, at least it has the capability to drop the feed dogs, which many of my old machines do not. I did a bit of applique on this machine, and found several stitches that I personally find more attractive than an ordinary satin stitch (yes, this machine does that, too). It has a variety of built in buttonhole stitches which I have not tried out. The harp (aka "throat") space is a little larger than my old vintage Featherweight, on which I do most of my machine free motion quilting. So yes, you can quilt on this machine. Somewhere I read on the listing that this machine has 225 built in stitches. If I include each and every alphanumeric stitch, I get about half that number. Now, the machine can do mirror image stitching, so perhaps that's where the larger figure comes from. This is not an embroidery machine where you can start the machine & come back when your motif is finished. It is a good, all around machine for home sewists and quilters.
