5 out of 5 stars   Not so fast
By MCHolden (Tulsa, OK) May 17, 2010
Review submitted for LG 47LH30 - 47" LCD FULL 1080P HDTV 50,000:1 Contrast Ratio (LG47LH30)
Other Comments: I just wanted to revise my review below, and there seems to be no other way than to post a new review... the picture actually takes about 8 seconds to come up, not 4. It seemed faster than that in my head. I am still thrilled with this TV though.

Pros: Reduced Glare, Energy Efficient, Outstanding picture clarity/resolution, Great Picture Quality, Setup is as easy as it gets
Cons: Confusing / Bad Remote Control
Other Comments: I love this TV! I've been researching HDTV's for about 2 years, watching and waiting for a fully-featured TV that met my demands for performance, features, size, and price. The LH30 line of TV's from LG caught my eye because of their exceptionally fast response times as well as their ultra-low energy usage. And I'm talking about real-world response times, not the manufacturer's exaggerated claims, which use varying standards of measurement. I'm a gamer and have had really bad experiences on other newer, more expensive hi-def sets because of the lag, even in "game mode". Some games such as Guitar Hero, Geometry Wars, MotoGP and pretty much all FPS's were actually unplayable it was so bad. This set has ZERO trace of lag, it's like playing on my old tube TV but with a far better picture of course. I also like that this TV is an "older" model so the price has really come down. Sure, it's not 120Hz or LED-backlit, but as nice as those features may be, they just aren't worth the extra hundreds of dollars to me. I can't find a single flaw in the picture when I'm watching it, so why pay more to fix something that ain't broke? And on that note, the picture is absolutely fantastic. I'm not going to say it'll beat the newest top-of-the-line models from 2010, but it is undeniably beautiful. I have a set of cheap rabbit ears hooked up to it and I get excellent reception for all the local over the air channels. OETA looks simply stunning at 1080i (upconverted to 1080p of course), particularly the nature shows. I've been watching the NBA playoffs and the PGA tour in HD, both of which came in great with no artifacts such as ghosting, blocking, or blurring, even during fast camera motion. Standard definition programs even come in shockingly well, looking just as good as they did on the old tube! I also stream Netflix through my Xbox 360. I was worried how streaming video would look on such a big screen but I was relieved to see just how great it looked (I have a 12mbps connection, your picture might not look as great if you have an entry-level internet package). I was worried that DVD's might not look so great but I was pleasantly surprised there too. It doesn't match the quality of the over-the-air HD channels or Netflix streams, but it is very enjoyable and there are no artifacts from the upscaling. Unfortunately I do not have a Blu-ray player so I can't comment on how that looks on this set but I can only imagine it is utterly ridiculous based on my experience with this TV so far. I also have not connected my PC to it yet so no comment there. The set is plenty bright and evenly lit. I turn the brightness all the way to zero at night to save energy and my sensitive eyes and it's still plenty bright. I do get some glare from a window in my living room during the day but cranking the brightness back up to 75 takes the edge off that. The built-in calibration system is awesome! I also like that it boots up pretty fast - about 4 seconds after I hit the power button the picture comes up. So as far as picture quality goes, this set is all "Pros". But now on to the Cons... I don't really like the layout of the remote. The quick-select menu is a tiny button in the bottom left corner so it's kind of awkward to reposition the remote to find it. Nothing "quick" about that. The input select button is also really small, but at least it's located at the top corner which makes it a bit more natural to press. As I mentioned above, I fiddle with the brightness of the picture depending on the time of day, and it's not as quick and easy as I'd like. I'd really prefer a dedicated set of up/down buttons for the backlight. Picture-in-picture would be nice but that's typically a feature found on higher-end sets. I'm satisfied with the amount of inputs, although there is only one set of component video inputs which might be a problem for some users (not for me). As far as the sound goes, I was very worried because it seems almost everyone is giving this set bad marks for sound, and I don't have a dedicated home theater setup. Luckily I find it to be totally adequate for a built-in set of speakers. In fact it is far better than the "high-end" tube TV I had before. Voices come through very clearly and the speakers are plenty loud for my 14'x14' living room. I can even crank it up over the vacuum cleaner if I need to, and there is no distortion or buzzing. No, the explosions in video games don't rock me out of my couch, my windows don't rattle from the bass, and I don't feel like the action is happening all around me, but they are perfectly acceptable speakers for gaming, TV, and movies. If you're that big of an audiophile or home theater geek you already have a dedicated receiver anyway, so what are you complaining about? Don't get me wrong, sound is important and a nice surround setup would no doubt make the overall viewing experience 10 times better, but the built-in speakers are good enough to make that a luxury, not a necessity, as some reviews would have you believe. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this purchase and I can't imagine that anyone looking for a great 47" picture without the latest bleeding-edge features would regret buying this TV, especially at this price! My friends with HDTV's can't believe what I paid compared to thier TV's, and it looks just as good if not better! I feel like a GENIUS!
