4 out of 5 stars   Pleasant sound, decent noise cancelling
By Kocho on May 27, 2015
Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros: Good noise cancelling for low frequencies works well Solid construction Sound quality is OK: the sound is pleasant and not fatiguing but it is not neutral and natural (sound quality is "boosted" with exaggerated lows, somewhat weak highs)
Cons: Bulky On the ear design (around the ear/bigger cups would be nicer) Cord too short White noise (hiss) in powered mode Noise cancellation for mid and high frequencies is perfect
Other Comments: While these may be one of the top noise cancelling headphones based on reviews online, their sound quality is nothing exceptional. Based on my own tests, they sound about the same as a quality pair of earbuds that come bundled with a decent cell phone. In fact, the earbuds from my Samsung Note (original edition from several years ago) sound slightly better across the board than these. No comparison with really good headphones such as Sennheiser SD600. I would only buy noise cancelling headphones like these if noise cancellation is a top priority - otherwise they are not worth the money at all as for a quarter of the price one can get much better sound quality in a quiet environment.

5 out of 5 stars   Works as advertised
By Joe on March 25, 2015

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros: I use a treadmill for an hour each morning. With a regular headphone, I had to keep the volume very high to hear over the noise of the treadmill. With these noise-cancelling headphones, I was able to lower the volume of the TV from about 56-60 all the way down to 20.
Cons: After one month, none identified so far.
Other Comments: I've already passed the advertised battery life and they are still working. I will switch to rechargeable batteries when the one that came with it expires.

5 out of 5 stars   Excellent NC
By Jaeger on January 05, 2014

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros:
Cons:
Other Comments: I am no audiophile so take this for what it's worth. I was using UE6000s, which are great-sounding but the NC is poor. These destroy the UEs in NC and might sound a little better (wider soundstage). They do not match Bose in NC. The case is large and I'm unsure I would carry-on such large item on a flight just for the NC.

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros: Extremely comfortable, Great carrying case, Music Quality Excellent
Cons: Little bulky, Sound Heard Externally, Noise Cancelling Okay, Can Still Hear People
Other Comments: The noise cancelling works okay, but on a recent flight I could still hear people. When I put my ipod on and the noise cancelling, it was amazing, I heard nothing. These are also great for making phone calls with, the sound is great.

5 out of 5 stars   High Quality Headphones
By Mike on May 01, 2013

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros: Clean Sound, Comfortable
Cons:
Other Comments: I use these headphones at every opportunity I can, which usually means in the office or at home. I listen to indie/alternative rock and EDM, and I think these headphones are versatile enough to provide me with the sound I'm looking for in both genres. The case allows for easy transportation without fear of accidentally scuffing/breaking the headphones. Also don't hold these badboys back--pair them with a headphone amp!

5 out of 5 stars   Pretty Good Headphones and Great Bass
By Thomas T on January 22, 2013

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros:
Cons:
Other Comments: I haven't had the chance to use it on a flight yet but I have tried it on at home in front of the tv. My first impression on these headphones I would say they are pretty good. It blocked out most of the noise from the tv. The sounds that comes out of these headphones are pretty amazing! I would recommend these over the bose qc-15 just because it has better sounds. As far as noise cancellation, I would probably recommend the bose over these. They are superior in that department. The bass was good. Not too overpowering like the Dre Beats headphones are. So overrall I am very satisfied with these headphones! Would highly recommend these to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars   Good Product, Good Price
By Micah J on January 08, 2013

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros: Multiple Nc Settings, Comfortable
Cons: Noise Bleed, Lifts From Ear Sometimes
Other Comments: I've used this only on the airplane so far, but it has worked well. It lifts from my ears sometimes, if I tip my head and I hear outside sounds when this happens. There is some noise bleed at louder volume levels, but nothing bad for a plane ride that already has plenty of noise from the engines. The sound is good and clean. I much prefer these that I picked up for far less than the Bose that everyone told me get. I've heard the Bose and they're comparable, but they out priced themselves to me.

5 out of 5 stars   Best For the Money
By Travel Guy on January 06, 2013

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros: price, Adjustable Cancelation Le
Cons: Not for Audiophiles
Other Comments: Good enough for my ears especially given that Bose qc15 is twice the price. Adjustable cancelling is useful. Sometimes you want to hear things (e.g. Someone's voice).

4 out of 5 stars   Great balance of performance and price!
By Ev on January 04, 2013

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros: Great noise cancellation, Good sound
Cons: Lightweight Build, No Replaceable Cushions, Bass And Treble Humps, Huge
Other Comments: I started looking at these after years of looking at Bose, which seemed to have the best performance for value. However, the sound from the Bose units was, in a word, horrible. In addition, I was looking for something that went around my ears, instead of on top of them. That narrowed the field significantly, but cost remained a factor, and most of the offerings of note are somewhat expensive. My primary use for the unit was to be in my office, which is across the street from a fire station. While the sirens are infrequent and therefore not a problem, the seemingly constant drone of equipment as it is being readiness tested began to wear on me. After reading a number of reviews over the years and seeing the ATs for a great price recently (with a rebate to boot), I took the plunge. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the ATs. While certainly not audiophile quality, the sound is better than the Bose offerings, and the three-stage noise cancellation is an added bonus, especially in the office environment. A note on the sound quality: when the noise reduction circuit is engaged, it sounds as though someone depressed the 'loudness' button. Contrary to what most reviewers have stated, I find the sound is closer to flat without the circuit engaged. However, most people will certainly prefer the bass and treble bump afforded by the noise reduction circuitry, and the sound in the 'off' position will likely be considered a bit bland. As with all noise cancellation headphones I have used, there is a hiss when the circuit is turned on, but I have come to expect it. In a noisy environment, the hiss is not noticeable, but in an office it is noticeable, but not objectionable after 10 minutes or so. I use the headphones about 4 hours during the workday, and at home from time to time. So far, I have not experienced any 'headphone fatigue,' but I have also fiddled with the fit considerably to find the sweet spot for the headband and the ear cups. Some reviewers have reported a rumbling sound with the noise reduction on, but it is a byproduct of a poor earcup seal. As far as the build is concerned, the ATs do feel a bit 'plasticky' and lightweight for the MSRP, but I feel the same about the Bose offerings as well. in addition, it would have been nice if they had an extra hinge so they can fold a bit more, because they are huge when in the included case. because of the large size, I am unsure as to whether I will be using them when I fly. For my purposes, however, the rather largish size is not a huge problem. Overall, I recommend these headphones heartily, particularly for those who are not enamored of the Bose sound. While there are a number of other offerings out there, the retail price (plus the rebate) makes these an unbeatable combination. Given that my other choice, the PSB M4U 2, is more than double what I paid (after the rebate), I believe this one is a no-brainer.

3 out of 5 stars   Good performers, but clumsy
By Nikki P. on December 23, 2012

Review submitted for Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones (ATHANC9)
Pros: Good for music
Cons: Huge, Clumsy, bulky
Other Comments: They're better for music than the Sony MDR-NC60, but the Sony fits closer to the head, is more comfortable, stows away in a much smaller case, and appears to be a much better build quality. I lost my MDR-NC60's and couldn't find a replacement, so I took a chance on the more expensive Audio-Technia. I'd trade them in a second for a new pair of MDR-NC60's. I ride BART (train) four days a week, and good noise canceling headphones are a must. The music reproduction quality is secondary to my needs.
