Z 6II and Z 7II: Everything You Need to Know

November 3, 2020 by BuyDig Team Leave a Comment

The next chapter in the saga of the Nikon Z series is available for preorder right now. The Z 6II and Z 7II are two new full-frame mirrorless cameras with more power and more features than the previous generation of Z’s. How do these new additions to the family compare not only to their predecessors, but to each other?

What’s New
Like the Nikon Z 6II, the Z 7II has dual card slots with a CFexpress/XQD slot and a second SD card slot. Both cameras have 3.5-times more buffer capacity than the previous generation, and boosted AF performance. The camera bodies on the Z 6II and Z 7II have also been reimagined and are compatible with a new vertical battery grip providing 1.9x more battery life that allows for more versatility and comfortable vertical shooting. The Z 6II and Z 7II both support Eye-Detection AF and Animal-Detection AF with video recording. They are the first Nikon cameras with this capability. Of course both the Z 6II and Z 7II are compatible with the growing number of NIKKOR Z mount lenses. But now these two new cameras, available for pre-order from Buydig.com, are also compatible with F-mount lenses. Just use the FTZ adaptor. The Z 6II and Z 7II have a USB-C input allowing for quick charging on those longer shoot days. You can also now shoot and charge simultaneously. Perfect for video or time-lapse photography.

New on the Z 6II
Thanks to the 24.5MP BSI resolution and a hybrid AF system with 273 points and 14fps, the Z 6II will impress you with its performance in low light situations. The Z 6II will be able to capture fast-moving subjects or those in dimly-lit spaces easier than ever. The dual processor design gives the Z 6II the ability to practically see in the dark at -6EV when paired with an f/2 lens or faster! If you’re a content creator, you will appreciate the full pixel readout with 4K UHD 60p, and the 3.5-times improved buffer capacity for faster continuous shooting. Never get stuck with a dead battery on the job again.

New on the Z 7II
The biggest difference between the new Z 6II and the Z 7II from Buydig.com is the pixel count. Neither camera changed from its predecessor, Z6 and Z7. The Z 6II still uses the same 24.5 megapixels BSI sensor. However, the Z 7II, while still the same as the Z7, has a 45.7MP BSI imager. You’ll be able to shoot 4K UHD 60p video right out of the box for smooth, ultra-high resolution performance with the Z 7II. The Z 6II will require a firmware update that is scheduled to be released later. The Z 7II is a good choice for landscape photography and long exposure work offering a lower native ISO 64 sensitivity.

Z 6II or Z 7II: Which One is for You?
With its balance of powerful performance and expert level multimedia features, the Z 6II is the better choice for shooters with a broad range of interests. Don’t let the Z 6II’s lower resolution fool you either. The Z 6II has some advantages over the Z 7II in terms of speed and video. The Z 7II is better for those with an eye for details. With its ultra-high resolution, the Z 7II is perfect for professionals shooting commercial, wedding, or studio photography.
