Most of us consider our pets family and will do almost anything to help them stay happy and healthy. “Pet appreciation week” is a pet holiday running June 3rd -9th meant to show how grateful we are for our pets. The idea of the holiday is to connect with your pet on a more fun level and show them how much we really love and appreciate them. They do so much for us from loving us unconditionally to alleviating stress and keeping us healthy by getting us outside for a walk. Here are some easy ways to pay them back this week and every day!
Quality time
Our pet’s favorite activity is hanging out with their favorite human! So put the phone down, grab a leash or a feather toy, and enjoy your furry friend. Dial up the snuggles

Learn a new trick
Grab the treats, pick a trick and teach your old dog a new trick. Teach the kitty how to high five. Get the dog to roll over. You can even teach your guinea pig to hop though a hoop!
Treats! Treats!
Nothing says “I love you” more than a big bag of yummy store-bought or homemade goodies. Treats should be healthy, as to not ruin a diet plan, and safe for your pets to eat. Play games involving the treats with dogs, cats, pigs, and horses or tie crunchy treats to the inside of housing units first thing in the morning for birds, rabbits and other small critters to enjoy.
Go on an outdoor adventure
Man’s Best Friend loves to get out and explore new places. Indulge your pooch with a fun day trip to a new park, or check out a new hiking trail. Take Fido to a doggy beach, or to a dog-friendly café. Older or less active dogs will find a trip to the park fun. Or take them on an extra-long stroll around the neighborhood with the whole family.
Need a pet to appreciate?
Of course you can be a petless animal lover! There are always fun ways you can help out at your local animal shelter. Offer to spend time with the dogs and cats by playing and giving them some much needed attention and belly rubs. Read a children’s book outside of their cage. This simple act has a positive effect on especially shy and fearful dogs without forcing physical interaction with them.
Doggy Play Zone
Consider adding a few features to your yard making it a doggy play zone. Get Fido a little wading pool, or add a sandbox and bury some toys for your four-legged pal. You can also make a doggy obstacle course.
The most important thing is to enjoy this special week with your devoted furry best friend.
