Apple continues to be an innovator when it comes to consumer computer products. The 20GB iPod is Apple's contribution to the new generation of Personal Music Delivery Systems/Portable Storage Devices. With its huge song capacity (in 128-Kbps AAC format,) 8 plus hours battery, 5.6 ounce weight and industry leading skip protection, iPod significantly improves the quality of the digital lifestyle.
It is the first MP3 player to be able to store over 5000 songs in a 5.6 ounce package that can literally be taken everywhere. By including a 32MB memory cache (no mechanical or moving parts) and continually pre-loading music into this cache, Apple has achieved up to a huge 25 minutes of skip protection. Additionally, iPod has the ability to sync with iTunes 4 software, Apple's application for playing, and play-list management of music files. Whenever connected via FireWire to the computer, the unit will sense any new updates made to the user's play-lists and automatically upload their contents.
At the heart of the iPod is an ultra slim 20GB FireWire drive, which also allows the unit to double as a portable storage device for files and applications. The FireWire protocol allows for fast transfer rates of both music and data files, and battery recharging can be achieved in as little as one hour (for 80% capacity) and three hours for a full charge. Additionally, the unit is continually being recharged while connected to the computer using the FireWire connection.
