What is LED TV?

The LED in LED TV stands for “light-emitting diode”. These diodes emit light when activated, which is what lights the screen. Most LED products feature a technology called local dimming. With local dimming, parts of the backlight can be brightened or dimmed independently when different parts of the picture get lighter or darker. This helps reduce the amount of light that can leak through to darker pixels, and makes blacks appear darker on those parts of the screen. The end result is a much more realistic and crisper picture with bright, outstanding colors.

LED vs LCD TV

People often ask for the difference between these two TVs. However, to clarify some confusion, an LED TV is an LCD TV. An LED TV uses a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel to control where light is displayed on your screen. Older LCD TVs used cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) to provide backlighting, while LED TVs used the diodes previously mentioned. But now current LCD screens use the same technology as LED TVs. In short, since both LED and LCD TVs are based around the same technology, there isn’t too much difference between the two.

LED TV Backlight

When LED TV displays first hit the market, they were backlit by a full array of LEDs behind the LCD and across the back of the panel. Moving forward, in order to create a thinner LED flat panel TV, engineers have had to eliminate that extra layer and move it over to the sides of the display. This backlighting means that the lights are affixed to each side of the TV, and that light is projected inward toward the middle of the box. It also means the TV screen can be any size while keeping it slim.

The main benefit of an edge-lit LED flat panel TV is that screens have gotten thinner and thinner, with some being under an inch in thickness. BuyDig.com offers the latest options and brands of LED TV’s at highly favorable prices in a variety of sizes from 32 inches right up to 84 inches.

Unlike plasma screens, backlighting on LED TV models is even more efficient than the standard fluorescent TV’s. They help cut down on power consumption, and some models are, inch for inch, the most effective products on the market. As an example, an average LED flat panel TV will use around 101 watts, compared to 111 watts for standard TV models. While screen size and picture brightness can affect power usage, even the biggest screens will render noticeable annual savings. That being said, they come in a variety of sizes too, with a small LED TV being around 19 inches, while the largest LED TV is around 70 inches.

Manufacturers are continuing to improve backlighting, flat panel units, and other features, and soon there will be edge-lit technology available.

For hardcore TV buffs, if you’re looking for what could be considered the best LED TV, look no further than the 70 inch LG model with smart functionality, a motion clarity index of 960, and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The unit is edge-lit with local dimming and comes with a Magic Remote and two pairs of 3D glasses. A Triple XD on this product makes for incredible color and clarity.
