The Model 4501 allows shared use of a mobile broadband Internet service from a broad range of cellular service providers and the USB modems or smartphones with tethering capability used on those services. .A fixed broadband modem with an Ethernet interface can also be shared. The broadband modem or tethered smartphone is plugged into the router and the broadband connection is then shared through either Wireless 802.11n/g/b, or a second 10/100 Ethernet connection.
The Model 4501 can be used to expand the range and enhance the data rate of a mobile broadband connections by placing the router and attached modem where a cellular signal is best, typically near a window. The Model 4501 can then complete the local connection to client devices with a robust wireless-N signal.

The Model 4501 supports the following wireless security modes: WEP, WPA, WPA2, and WPS. Both ad hoc and infrastructure mode wireless networking is supported. Router features include an SPI firewall, VPN Pass-through, remote management, Universal Plug and Play, and up to 253 concurrent users. The Model 4501 can also provide wireless router and firewall functions for a wired WAN connection through an Ethernet interface. A wide range of WAN connection protocols are supported, including: static IP, dynamic IP (DHCP client), PPTP, L2TP, PPPoE, and 3G/4G. Automatic fail-over to mobile broadband service is supported in the event a wired WAN connection is attached and goes down.
Smartphone tethering capability may require additional service fees.
