The AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 features a Di* optical system designed for digital SLR cameras.

*Di (Digitally integrated) is a designation Tamron gives lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras as well as film cameras.

Tamron now offers a lightweight, compact, high-image-quality telephoto zoom lens with macro capability of 1:2 that can also be used with digital cameras: the AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 (Model A17) . The new lens is a Di type lens using an optical system with improved multi-coating designed to function with digital SLR cameras as well as film cameras. With this 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens, flipping a macro switch in the focal length range of 180mm to 300mm obtains a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at a minimum focus distance as short as 95cm (37.4"), enabling close-up shots of flowers, insects, and other objects that normally require the use of a specially designed macro lens. Moreover, this is a zoom lens that casually offers the distant capture and foreshortening effect pleasures of the 300mm ultra-telephoto world.

Main Features:

Improved Coatings Transform Zoom Lens into a Di Type Lens Designed for Digital SLR Cameras
By employing "Internal Surface Coatings" (i.e., multiple-layer coatings on cemented surfaces of plural elements) and new multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements, ghosting and flare due to reflections that occur when light enters through the front element and reflections caused by the imagers themselves are reduced to the absolute minimum. Additionally, upgraded advanced quality control raises the level of resolution performance standards and prevents flare due to aberrations, resulting in a telephoto zoom lens suitable for photography with interchangeable-lens type digital SLR cameras.

Macro Effect of 1:2 in Telephoto Zoom Range
Flipping a macro switch in the focal length range of 180mm to 300mm allows entry into the macro range, for photography as close as 95cm (37.4") from the subject. In the macro range, one can take advantage of the telephoto effect and a maximum magnification ratio up to 1:2. (In normal shooting ranges, the minimum focus distance is 1.5m.) In addition, since the focal length in the macro range spans from 180mm to 300mm, zooming can also be used to adjust composition.

Designed for Use on Both Digital and 35mm Film Cameras
The ultra-long telephoto zoom covering up to 465mm equivalent can be used on a digital SLR camera, while the wide-end 70mm can be used with a conventional 35mm film SLR camera for portraits and other moderately mid-range shots.

Do not buy "refurbished", JUNK!!!

Every disappointed. Bought expecting it to work. Zoom ring broken. When I see "refurbished" I expect it to be tested by tech and work out of the box. Not a good experience. Would not buy "refurbished" from Beach Camera again.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

Not bad, overlooked lens

Pros: Lightweight, Low Cost, Consistent Output, Easily Interchangeable Cons: Poor in Low Light Other thoughts: Not a bad lens, especially for the money, but the macro function only works in the range of 180-300mm. Throughout the rest of the range you have to shoot from a longer distance, so there is a gap in the field of view from the regular to macro range. I probably wouldn't have purchased it if I had known this. Still, the image quality is above average for a consumer lens of this build and the price is rediculously low. I believe this is discontinued but can still be found new and refurbished.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

Pros: Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus Cons: Bulky, Heavy Other thoughts: Bought this just days before leaving for the Grand Tetons & Jackson Hole. It arrived on schedule and in very protective packaging. Tried it out right away around the house and seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. It is replacing it's grandfather relative lens (same make & such) of 20 years which also captured amazing landscapes and wildlife. This lens didn't let me down. Still heavy, but worth the weight. Postcard perfect shots every time including moving water, distant lanscapes, and even low lighting. GREAT LENS!

Pros: Strong Construction, Lightweight, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Durable, Easily Interchangeable Cons: Other thoughts: Good solid lens for the money, for the average person (not pro) you don't need to spend hundreds more on another manufacturer, this one will do just fine and you would never know the difference.

Look like a pro...or paparazzi

Pros: Easily Interchangeable, Amazing pictures, Strong Construction, Durable, Consistent Output Cons: Slow Focus, Poor in Low Light, Heavy, Big Other thoughts: This lens is amazing for photographers that like to look like they know what they're doing (like my husband and myself). My husband uses this lens like he's paparazzi and will take pictures of me from across the street. It takes amazing photos, but you need to make sure you adjust the focus properly, or else it can get blurry. The one drawback is that it's not easy to throw my camera in a bag for impromptu photos because the lens is pretty massive. Though it is worth it for those planned pro-looking images.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend
