5 out of 5 stars   great action camera
By Corgiguy (Walpole, MA) March 26, 2011
Review submitted for Pentax K-x Digital SLR Lens Kit w/ DA L 18-55mm and 55-300mm Lens (White) (PKKXKT255300W)
Pros: Light easy to handle, easy download to computer, Great at action shots, Intuitive controls
Cons: Skinny manual focus ring
Other Comments: The Pentax K-x was a great choice for me. I hoped I could capture action shots of my dogs as they performed in agility, herding, obedience and tracking. I found by using the sports mode and single point focus I could take hundreds of shots and only a few would be out of focus. The hawk pictured below was two hundred feet away from me. The continual autofocus is faster and more accurate than I could hope to be if I was operating on manual. I wish the manual focus ring were wider. Eventually I hope to master the challenge of manual operation, but in the meantime I am enjoying an automatic camera that is superior in every way to my old digital camera. At three hundred pages the instructions are daunting at first, but they is sensibly organized and I can find what I need to do the job. I have been making trips to the library and book store to supplement my knowledge. The camera and lenses are surprisingly light and fit well in the hand.

4 out of 5 stars   I'm loving it so far

Pros: Very easy to use, Picture Quality, Build Quality, Kit Price, Color
Cons: Supplied Software, LCD Screen
Other Comments: This is my family's first Dslr camera so I didn't know exactly what to expect with the Pentax. I read up on it as much as possible but that's not the same as actually having it in your hand. I've had it for almost a month now and so far it's been great ( mostly in Auto , Portrait or Sports mode. Some of the pictures I've taken are fantastic. In fact I took pics at my 1 yr nieces bday party and a lot of them were better or as good as a hired photographer who was using a Canon 5d ( a $2400 camera). That being said I found there is a great, great deal for me to learn, but that has really pushed my interest in photography to a much higer level. I've been trying the M mode as much as possible. I've also passed it around to my older kids on a trip and let them take pictures and they really enjoyed using it and really got them thinking creatively. Some other pro's It's not too bulky, cool to look at and takes great pictures. I've also got a set of rechargable AA batteries and they've gone for several days of shooting ( outdoors and indoors with flash as well as a lot of night shots) My only gripes have been with the LCD view screen. I didn't think it would matter to me but the more I use the camera, the more I wish for higher resolution. The software that comes with the camera is pretty much useless. All in all,I'd say so far we love the Pentax k-x.
