16.2 Megapixel Back-illuminated ?Exmor R? CMOS Image Sensor

The DSC-HX9V features a 16.2 megapixel ?Exmor R? CMOS image sensor that brings out the full resolving power of the camera?s Sony G lens to deliver extremely fast speed, high resolution, and stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain. In addition, the combined ?Exmor R? CMOS sensor and BIONZ image processor delivers extremely fast up to 10fps, Anti Motion Blur, Hand-held Twilight and 1080p movie modes.4

3.0? (921K dots) Xtra Fine LCD display

3.0? (921K dots) Xtra Fine LCD with TruBlack technology gives you deeper blacks and more color in your display, all while being thinner than most LCDs.

Compact camera with 16x optical zoom

The Sony 16x optical zoom G lens brings distant subjects super close for great outdoors, sports, and travel photos. The compact size makes it easy to take along in a pocket, purse, or backpack.

Full HD 1080/60p

Record crystal clear movies at the highest resolution available with capabilities for 60p in 1080 Full HD. This provides stunning, fast motion video with less distortion for playback on your Blu-ray Disc players, Sony PlayStation3 systems and compatible PCs and HDTVs.

Backlight Correction HDR

Don?t miss a single detail in high contrast shots. The built in backlight correction analyzes the image and automatically adjusts accordingly to give you a perfectly lit shot. Backlight Correction HDR helps correct for this by taking three pictures at different exposure settings and processing the best elements of each into a single image for more natural looking shots.

3D Still Image and 3D Sweep Panorama mode

Produce awe-inspiring images with 3D still image and 3D Sweep Panorama capabilities.4 Photos will take on a new dimension of creative capabilities for viewing the world in a whole new way.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode

With Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode just press the shutter, pan the landscape and let the camera do the rest. It automatically links together each frame to produce a high resolution panoramic image providing the ability to zoom in on small details. This model even detects faces and moving subjects to stitch intelligently different widths to help avoid subject distortion.

Hi-speed Linear Focus

Life moves fast, your camera?s focus needs to move just as fast. The Hi-speed linear focus achieves dramatically clearer images with an auto focus that moves just as fast as your life.

Background Defocus

DSLR photographs are often beautiful because they blur the background, putting the emphasis on your subject. Now our point-and-shoot cameras can deliver this signature DSLR benefit. The system takes two shots, identifies the background and applies a defocused background keeping the subject crisp and clear.

Superior Auto mode

Get cleaner, more dynamic pictures and fewer missed shots. The camera automatically recognizes the correct scene mode, then quickly shoots and combines up to six shots to produce images with greater clarity, optimum dynamic range using backlight correction HDR technology and lower image noise using 6 shots layering technology. Superior Auto intelligently detects 33 scenes for still images and 44 scenes for movies, making it easy to get the best shot.

Digital Zoom

Capturing the right shot at the right moment has never been so easy. Digital zoom brings you right close up to the action so you can get that perfect shot, every time.

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to detect camera shake and automatically shifts the lens to help prevent blur without sacrificing image quality.

Soft Skin mode

Portrait subjects will love the results. Soft Skin mode recognizes skin tones and reduces the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles without affecting the rest of the shot.

Natural Flash

Conventional point-and-shoot camera flash shots just don't capture colors the way the eye sees them. Natural Flash mode takes a reference shot without flash and then uses that reference to correct the color, for far more lifelike images.

HDMI output

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams. HDMI connects digital audio/video sources such as a compatible camcorder, Blu-ray Disc player, a personal computer, a video game console, or an AV receiver to a compatible digital audio device and/or video monitor such as a digital television (DTV). Easily connect your Cyber-shot camera via HDMI cable to any compatible HDMI compatible device to easily enjoy and upload content.

Smile Shutter technology

Smile Shutter technology captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply press the Smile Shutter button and the camera does the rest. You can also select adult and child priority and indicate the degree of Smile Detection sensitivity. Intelligent Scene Recognition can be used together with Smile Shutter mode. This means that beautiful smiles can be captured with settings optimized for the particular scene, even in difficult conditions such as twilight and backlighting.

Face Detection technology

Sony?s Face Detection technology can automatically distinguish between children and adults. Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and adjusts flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends.

Motion Detection

It?s frustrating to capture the perfect shot, only to review it later and discover subjects blinked during the photo. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting or blinking. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot.

Anti-blink Function

It?s frustrating to capture the perfect shot, only to review it later and discover subjects blinked during the photo. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting or blinking. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot.

Compatible with PC and Mac Systems

The Full HD video captured with the DSC-HX9V can be used with the provided Picture Motion Browser software for PC and iMovie (sold separately) for Mac systems.

Includes Sony PMB (Picture Motion Browser) Software ver. 5.5

Sony Picture Motion Browser software offers a simple, intuitive way to transfer, sort, and view your video and still images on your compatible PC. In addition, multiple output options let you burn your memories to DVD using an external DVD burning device (sold separately), as well as take advantage of one click upload to a number of popular video and photo sharing sites (such as Facebook and Sony?s Personal Space site).

Includes Sony PMB Portable software

With the pre-installed Picture Motion Browser (PMB) Portable the DSC-HX9V makes it easy to pre-select videos and images in the camera and conveniently upload them from the camera to a compatible PC and popular Internet sharing sites without the need for any additional software to install.

4 out of 5 stars   Get it for the video capabilities
By kqn (NJ) June 24, 2012
Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Fast/accurate auto-focus, Easy To Use, Great Zoom, Small / Compact, Large Clear LCD, Good Image Stabilization
Cons:
Other Comments: This is the best compact for video with a rare capability 1080 progresive at 60 frames per second (even very expensive DSLR from Canon, Nikon cannot achieve this), a superb image stabilization that rivals a steadycam (especially at wide angle), a superb high resolution 900K+ screen and a very good optics (I really like the 24mm wide angle end and the 384mm telephoto end). The fixed aperture is a negative. The camera also tends to blow out highlights so with brightly lit objects, you may want to set exposure at -1EV or -2EV.

4 out of 5 stars   I like it!
By BKPKer (Monterey, CA) May 31, 2012
Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Large Clear LCD, Good Image Stabilization, Good Image Quality
Cons:
Other Comments: I just got this camera and used it during a recent backpacking trip. The image quality is significantly better than my previous point and shoot camera (A Canon) but it is larger and heavier, which is a con for backpackers. But I still love it and taking panoramas are super easy. When I was doing some research before buying a camera, one of the cons mentioned about it in product reviews was that there are too many features. I have found that to be true. I have been looking for various features and it's often hard to find where they are. But I think it's worth the quality of pictures. Since this is a new camera, I do not know about durability yet. There is another con: the camera does not come with a plug-in charger so you have to plug in the camera itself to charge the battery. However, this problem can be easily fixed by buying a separate charger from Sony or aftermarket. Again, so far the quality, colors, and the zoom are great.

3 out of 5 stars   Disappointing indoor performance
By Johnbachel (Albany, NY) May 23, 2012
Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Easy To Use, Small / Compact, Great Zoom, Large Clear LCD
Cons: Poor Flash, Poor Image Quality
Other Comments: I bought this camera to take snapshots of my family and for vacations. Two main problems - very inconsistent flash metering and inaccurate skin tones. The flash metering varied between underexposed and blown out. Skin tones were far darker than reality.

By vegdaze (washington, dc) April 28, 2012
Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Good Image Quality, Fast/accurate auto-focus, Good Image Stabilization, Easy To Use, Great Zoom
Cons:
Other Comments: I took this on my trip to HI for 10 days and it was really flexible. I loved having the extra zoom power, though usually it isn't necessary. The wide lens is nice. I'm happy with the photo quality though it isn't that much better than my Nikon P50 from about 50 years ago. The extra tools (like panormaic) make the upgrade worth it.

5 out of 5 stars   I love this camera!!!
By JJRDH (West Central Georgia) February 26, 2012
Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Easy To Use, Good Image Quality, Great video in low light, Large Clear LCD, Good in Low Light, Good Image Stabilization, Fast/accurate auto-focus, Great Zoom
Cons: Just a little too big, Pop Up Flash
Other Comments: I love this camera! Before I bought this I had three things I was looking for in the camera I bought (besides taking good pictures of course) It had to fit in my back pocket, it had to have a three inch LCD screen, and it had to take good video in low light. This takes good pictures in low light also, but I can always use a flash for pictures, but not with video! Before purchasing this camera I decided to try the Sony TX55. It was beautiful and it was small. I hated the touchscreen, was not happy with the zoom or picture quality, and returned it after a couple of days. After spending hours looking at reviews and comparing cameras this Sony HX9V is what I chose and despite the fact that I swore I would not buy a camera that would not fit in my back pocket this is perfect. I'll learn to deal with having to wear a fanny pack or something when I'm hiking or in the yard. It takes awesome video even at full zoom and in low light! I took video at my son's Pinewood Derby competition and even the pictures I took clear from the other side of the gym using the 16Xzoom in very poor lighting are clear as a bell. I viewed the videos on both my computer and large screen HD TV and was amazed at the quality! Even on the 42 inch TV it was crisp and clear! I love the 16X zoom and cannot imagine how I ever lived with a piddly little 5X zoom before. I have taken tons of pictures at full zoom and cannot believe how clear they come out! The Sweep panorama is really fun to use and comes out very clear in my opinion! The only things that I consider to be cons are relatively small complaints and I have learned, or am learning to deal with them. It is just a little bit larger than I would like it to be, but I wouldn't part with any of its features to get a smaller camera. Well, except maybe the GPS. I have not used it because I really don't have a need for it and many reviewers stated that it takes a long time to lock in on a satellite and it eats up battery power fast. Also the pop up flash seems to be in somewhat of an awkward place where you would naturally want to hold the camera while taking pictures, but it's not all that bad and I've learned to adjust. The flash also sometimes seems to be overkill and to wash out my pictures. But I would imagine I can learn how to fix that. And anyway I rarely even need the flash since the camera takes such good pictures in low light. I have not used the 3D features since I do not have a 3D TV. Nor do I know anyone that does. That kind of seemed like a useless function, but maybe some people will like it. The battery life seems acceptable, however not quite as good as my last camera. That's ok though as I purchased a charger/car charger and two of the batteries that actually give you the minutes remaining. Did I mention that I love this camera? But I still kind of wish it had been available in something other than black. I do not like black which tells you how awesome this camera is that I would own it in black.

4 out of 5 stars   Great photos and video
By Status (Ithaca, NY) February 22, 2012
Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Large Clear LCD, Good Image Stabilization, Easy To Use, Fast/accurate auto-focus, Good in Low Light, Short Lag Time, Great Zoom, Good Image Quality
Cons: Sony specific cords
Other Comments: Haven't used it much yet, but got it in anticipation of an international family trip this summer. Coming from a Pentax K DSLR, and Panasonic DV tape camcorder. Photos are crisp, auto focus very quick, image stabilization strong, outstanding zoom. Video is pretty awesome in a small package. Image stabilization was outstanding even in low light. Considered Nikon S9100 and Canon SX230 as well. Heard too many horror stories about S9100 problems with mechanical issues, auto-focus not working and poor / nonexistent image stabilization for video. SX230 seemed a little clunky and was not as large a zoom. Only real con that I can see right now is the need for Sony specific USB cord and HDMI. Typical Sony, at least they figured out the rest of the world doesn't use Sony sticks anymore and takes SD, SDHC, and SDXC.

Pros: Great for moving subject, Good Image Quality, Great Zoom, Great video, Good in Low Light
Cons: Pop-up flash bad idea
Other Comments: The majority of the pictures are of my 5 year old daughter. I love the fast shooting capabilities. Gave me 8 great photos of her running and jumping into a pile of leaves. I found the low light results better than my Samsung and lots more pre-settings too. Video is very good too. I spent about 3 hours looking for the best camera and ended up with this and I'm very happy.

4 out of 5 stars   Definitely a keeper (Like it)

Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Good in Low Light, Good Image Quality, Easy To Use, Good Image Stabilization, Fast/accurate auto-focus, Small / Compact, Large Clear LCD
Cons: Flash location, Small buttons
Other Comments: This camera takes excellent low light pictures. I own another camera(s) which takes horrible low light video and picture. I expected more zoom because I had 18x fixed zoom camera, but no worry. For those who think that this camera is slow, short battery life, bad pictures then they should read manual completely. Don't expect everything in Auto mode. BTW there are 2 different Auto Mode, one(yellow) take excellent low light & blur free picture which is (of-course)slow it processes multiple pictures and makes it one but another one(green) is fast and more useful for outdoor and steady location. Flash popping out is little issue but it is just a matter of changing holding habit. I am not a big and tall person but I felt buttons are small. I like this camera because my wife and kids including 6yr old can take excellent picture with just few instructions, including Panorama, wow so easy.

4 out of 5 stars   Amazing video, decent stills, GPS bleh
By The Richards (East Tennessee) November 16, 2011
Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Large Clear LCD, Video quality outdoors, Good Image Stabilization, Looks cool, Pretty fun
Cons: Poor GPS, Short Battery Life, No Viewfinder
Other Comments: I bought this mostly for the video capabilities. The video in good light rivals (and bests) many dedicated camcorders on the market right now. If you can work around the limitations it is excellent. The still photo quality is quite good although not as "class leading" as the video quality. There is a lag on the zoom and in low-light the picture looks grainy (video) or watercolor-like (still). I have yet to get the GPS to lock on and tag photos properly but I never really bought the camera for that feature and just leave it off now to save battery life.

5 out of 5 stars   Thank You Sony! Great Camera!

Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Large Clear LCD, Short Lag Time, Great Zoom, Good Image Quality, Good Image Stabilization, Easy To Use, Good in Low Light, Fast/accurate auto-focus, Small / Compact
Cons: Flash Location Poor, No Viewfinder
Other Comments: Still have my first Sony and keep it in the boat in case we forget to bring the newer one. Second one died and I unfortunately replaced it with a Kodak almost two years ago. Hate it and the battery doesn't hold a charge well - never has compared to the Sonys. We are avid trail riders (horses). Took a video while going down the trail just to test it. The little hand was flashing indicating that I needed to hold still. Keep shooting anyway. Even with the motion of being on horseback it was a great video!! The zoom is great and the camera is compact and fits easily in my case in my horn bag. The zoom is great for bringing the wildlife up close and personal. The only con I have found so far is the location of the flash, but with all the other assets of this camera I will happily live with it. I don't usually bother with reviews, but I LOVE this camera!

4 out of 5 stars   Good Deal!
By outandabout (seattle, wa) November 04, 2011
Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)
Verified Purchaser
Pros: Great Zoom, Nice Body Color, Good Image Quality, Small / Compact, Easy To Use
Cons: Lag / Shutter Delay
Other Comments: One thing to look out for: If you own a MAC and are planning on uploading your images onto it the software for uploading your videos is not compatible with Mac's and you have to download it from anther source-this is highly inconvenient and sometimes doesn't even work at all! Other than that I am very pleased with the quality of photos, I did a lot of research and this camera was really my top choice. The panoramic option, burst, and the slow shutter option(for indoor photos) are all really great perks.

4 out of 5 stars   Camera For Life

Review submitted for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V 16.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera w/ 16x Optical Zoom (SNDSCHX9V)

Pros: Nice Body Color, Great Picture Quality, Sleek Lots of features, Large Clear LCD, Easy To Use, Great Zoom, Fast/accurate auto-focus, Good Image Stabilization, Good Image Quality
Cons: Short Battery Life
Other Comments: I bought this camera because I needed a great camera for family portraits and for my tavels. The image quality is a given with 16 Mp and all other features, including great a video recording. I also love that this camera automaticaly separates my photos into separate "file" according to date. However I find it a bit heavy and do not need alls the features that come with it. I wish it had a longer battery life. Bottom line I am excited to have a great camera and the great photographs to come.
