The S85 offers control over the cameras internal sharpening algorithm with a setting of -2 to +2 (minus being less sharpening, positive being more).
    • Auto Bracketing
Automatic bracketing is the exposure of an odd number of frames, typically three or five, over and under exposed by equal steps to enable the photographer to select the best exposed frame at a later time. The S85 shoots three exposures at 0.3, 0.7 or 1.0 EV steps.
    • Aperture Priority
The DSC-S85 offers a wide range of apertures which will provide the photographer with good flexibility and creative options. In aperture priority mode shutter speeds can go down as slow as 8 seconds.
      • Wide: F2.0, F2.2, F2.5, F2.8, F3.2, F3.5, F4.0, F4.5, F5.0, F5.6, F6.3, F7.1, F8.0
      • Tele: F2.5, F2.8, F3.2, F3.5, F4.0, F4.5, F5.0, F5.6, F6.3, F7.1, F8.0
    • Shutter Priority
Shutter priority allows you to designate the shutter speed and the camera calculates the correct aperture. Available shutter speeds:
      • 1/1000, 1/800, 1/640, 1/500, 1/400, 1/320, 1/250, 1/200, 1/160, 1/125, 1/100, 1/80, 1/60, 1/50, 1/40, 1/30, 1/25, 1/20, 1/15, 1/13, 1/10, 1/8, 1/6, 1/5, 1/4, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1, 1.3, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.2, 4, 5, 6, 8 secs

    • MPEG Movie Mode
The S85 features the new MPEG EX mode as DSC-S75. This is one of the first "video to storage card" methods of capture, put simply it means the video clip length is only limited by the amount of free space on your Memory Stick. Sony have achieved this by decreasing the video bandwidth by reducing the frame rate and lowered audio quality. You can still record higher quality MPEG HQ clips (15 seconds max.) if you prefer. Here's breakdown of the available MPEG video modes (all include audio recording):
      • MPEG HQ - 16 fps, data rate: 355 KB/s, Clip length: 15s
      • MPEG 320 - 8 fps, data rate: 88 KB/s, Clip length (64MB Memory Stick): 11m 47s
      • MPEG 160 - 8 fps, data rate: 22 KB/s, Clip length (64MB Memory Stick): 45m 46s
    • Twilight Scene Mode / Night Shots
Twilight Scene Mode allows you to take long exposures up to 2 seconds. If you need to go slower than that you can switch to Manual Exposure and select up to 8 second exposures.
    • White Balance
    • Dynamic Range
    • Connections
On the left side of the camera we'll find a neat hinged and sprung door behind which lurk the mini-USB connector and AV output terminal, just above the door is the ACC connector for connection to a proprietary Sony accessory (such as the HV-FL1000 flash unit).
    • Accessory Shoe / ACC connector
The S85's accessory shoe is connection-less and is designed to take the optional HVL-F1000 flash unit which is in turn connected to the camera via the ACC connector on the side.
    • There is also a new tripod (VCT-D480RM) which includes a remote control and connects to the S85 via the ACC connector.
